Raider's Roundup is in the books for 2010
« on: September 13, 2010, 09:33:46 AM »
Got back from a great weekend with all the wonderful people from south of the border, (and one other Canadian). The details will no doubt be published soon by the appropriate authorities , but I just can't wait to spill the beans------ The first and second place in Expert where taken by electric planes (and their worthy pilots)  Ist --- Norm Whittle . 2nd---Paul Walker.
ps   weather turned out very nice ,overall.

WELL..I had a great time. Good flying, and it's great to see YOU from the cold north.

It's my first time at that flying field. The back ground is something I need to get used too.
The "OZONE" flyer's put up a great show. We could have used a few more people in Advanced. I think you where the only one. You didn't fly and you got a trophy!!! See how you are. Your just a winner Keith!

Thanks goes to ALL of the Seattle Sky Raiders, Dave Gardner, Steve Helmick, Bill Darkhow, (sp), and MR. BOB EMITT sp again.....dang names. Thank you all!! y1

Sorry I missed you, Scott. Planned to come on Sunday, but had some family stuff I had to do. Sigh...

I will be at the Fall Follies both days. Hope the weather is as good.

Keith,

Not sure how you are cookin' your beans but a couple of things seem wrong.
1.) Electrics could not possibly win 1st and 2nd in Expert anywhere.  I know this from reading about it on the internet.
2.) Norm Whittle could never beat Paul Walker.

Therefor things are just as they have always been.  The sky is not falling.

Just a '1984' rouse, right??

I don't know, Phil. I watched Norm practicing on Sunday. He looked pretty good with the new eSultan.

P.T.G.-----I was one of the judges for expert ,ably assisted by Bob Emmett, and believe me when I say that I was as surprised as anybody when I looked at the results.Paul flew very  well indeed, in his precise crisp style, and it may just be, that errors are more noticable when a flight is so crisp.Norm just didn't give anything away. ps    Didn't a little bird tell me that you will soon be shaking hands with volts and amps.Actually I know better than to ask you a question like that , from past experience I would say that you are just too full of beans to openly confess to something like that.

Oh, the ingratitude of some people!!

You share all your slowly learned electric information, and then they take it and turn around and beat you with it!  I tell ya, I just don't get no respect!

Well, it's much better to learn at this contest than say the Nationals.  I was doing an experiment.

All the previous competition flights with that plane used the TP5S4000 battery packs. They weigh 14 ounces each.  However, I was doing a "Sparky" experiment and used the new 5S2600 packs at 10 ounces each.  Yes, the plane was 4 ounces lighter at 57 ounces ready to fly.  The issues was with the CG.  With the ligher battery, I couldn't get the CG as far forward as it needed to be, but I flew it anyways.  OK, lesson learned.  CG too far back, and too tight on the corners.

OK Normy, no more messing around.  I'll just have to be more serious around you now!!!

Really, Norm did a great job getting his new plane together and working so well in just ~30 flights. Very nice package!  It's nice that he borrowed from me, and now it's my turn to borrow from him. He went where I have been wanting to go in my next design.  His wing was just under 1.9 inches thick.  Thanks for that data point, now I can proceed without worrying with my new design.

Well, it's not like Norm just fell off the turnip truck either. The boy knows how to fly. I was impressed with the practice flights that Paul flew on Saturday. That is one cool unit (in spite of dodging weeds).

Real good contest, as always.

While Norm and Barb Whittle were getting the trailer hooked up I took a few moments to call Gordan.

"Yeah, Norm's new model looks great! His practice flights were good, his officials were better. How did he do? Well, this is the NW and there ain't nobody, less the odd World Champion or two, gonna beat PW in his own backyard, so that's out of the question. But it's not all Bad News (nudge-nudge, wink-wink), I think Norm got 3rd. Maybe 4th, there was quite a crowd around the score boards for some odd reason, but I'm pretty sure he got a solid 3rd..."

Not yet mentioned, at the last possible moment prior to the awards presentation I caught Dave Gardner halfway into his van and beavering away at his computer and printer, both used to print pictures which are central to the awards given this year. Having asked what he was doing, Dave responded with, "Uh, this is kinda like reworking the 'Dewey Beats Truman' headline."

Paul,
when you refer to his wing as being 1.9 inches thick, is that the root or the average of the root and tip thicknesses?  Or better asked, "What do you mean"?
Thanks.

Not Paul, but I know something about it.  The wing at the root is 18% (without flaps) or 1.89" thick. Virtually the same thickness as a Nobler but with a much rounder Leading Edge.
