FIRST!
THANKS AL RABE... SO GREAT TO SEE YOU POSTING HERE ON SPARKY'S SITE!
I too, FOREVER, hold precious those memories from the good ol' daze in Seattle...when I lived in that little apt. from hell...near Boeing Field and on that hill that seemed like it was only only about 50ft below the flight path that you took with that old big orange 727 Braniff airliner of yours.
Those bright landing lights would light up my old apt. like a sunny day and shake those brick walls...like those notorious NW earthquakes from hell. on about a regular basis---morn. noon-n'night!
It was always such a pleasure....when you would call up that you were heading on a lay-over in Seattle.
As soon as you hung the phone up...I remember how I could call every stunt addicted grunt in the entire Seattle Tacoma area...where I would set up a quick hanger session at the ol 2nd floor apt from hell.
(I then would also make a long distant phone call to Tim Dunlop of Portland Oregon and his son vance....THAT OUR AL RABE WAS COMIN' TO TOWN!...
Tim and Vance...our buds from Tacoma...would drive non-stop from Portland and assend on that little apt. with a batch of newly harvested sea foods...(from the PIKE PLACE market) and I would buy or borrow a bunch of Brew from my Rainier Beer brother in apt 1A below who also worked at the BigRrrrrrrrrrrr!brewwing bottling Co.)
The we let the STUNT PARTY DOWN TIME BEGIN!
Ron would often would bring cases that he would glean off the back delivery ramp on his way home from his 2nd shift job.) payment from letting him borrow my old BSA or X-6 Hustler for weekend rides with his new girl friend.
How could I deny him....he was the landlord over all of us...in those days and he didn't mind the paint fume smells or the loud party times that often abounded with passion, late into the nights on a regular basis...plus his gal friend was one really beautiful but scary looking chick who loved so many of us...on a regular basis in those days.
Hummm? At bit of a risk...but not a bad deal when I think back just how much fun things we had with all those fun toys we used to share in those early days.
(Al, if you are lurking, you might remember that Tim was a tea-tottlin' Fire Dept. staff captain at the time) WHO WAS ALWAYS CONCERNED THAT A BUNCH OF US BALSA BUTCHERS, WOULD GET DRUNK AND BURN THAT APT. COMPLEX TO THE GROUND. while celebrating your return to the NW on those layovers.
HEY GANG! A TRUE AL RABE STORY!!
I will never forget how much time it took to load up those beautiful large scale BEAR CAT'S n MUSTANG'S of AL RABES into that little 67 sunroofed VW of mine, that Al would borrow on his layovers...(as a bachlor, I had a company car that allowed an extra vehicle..not counting those motorcycles from hell.
I will never forget the story that Al shared with me about one trip, where he was running late to the airport with my old VW from hell...Al grabbed the keys, quickly packed that BEARCAT of his into the borrowed VW.
How do you pack a large stunt model into a teeny VW? Just put one wing on the passenger seat...the other wing on the back deck lid seat.
Being late...he hopped in and quickly took off for the SEA TAC airport...with that big beautiful BEAR CAT rockin back and forth as Al headed toward the airport.
Suddenly OUT OF NOWHERE!!! Al noticed that an ol' lady started pullin' right out in front of the VW!
QUICK REFLEXES, AND QUICK THINKING, (alikin' to the extensive pilot training perhaps)
WITHOUT SO MUCH AS BLINKIN N' EYEBALL!
AL TURNED QUICKLY OVER HIS SHOULDER...GRABBED THAT BEAUTIFUL BEARCAT OF HIS..WITH BOTH ARMS AND HANDS!
HAMMERED THE BRAKES HARD, AND BRACED HIS FEET FOR A CRASH!!!
NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THAT VW OF MINE...due to the C.G. heavy engine in the back...SUDDENLY SPUN THAT LITTLE VW,ROUND AND ROUND LIKE A SPINNING TOP!!!
Because of AL'S LIGHTINING REFLEXES...THAT SPINNING VW!...MISSED HITTING NOT ONLY THAT OLD LADY, BUT ALSO AND FAR AND AWAY MORE IMPORTANTLY....
AL SAVED THAT BEAUTIFUL NEW BEARCAT OF HIS! WITHOUT A SCRATCH ON EITHER THE BEAR CAT, OR THE CAR OR BIG AL RABE!...
I wish I could have seen that scene on video....what a great UTuber that would have made, huh?
BETTER YET!
AL MADE IT TO THE AIRPORT JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME...FOR HIS BRANIFF FLIGHT LAYOVER!
Everytime I saw one of those brightly colored Braniff airplanes...I felt comfort that those pilots...if they were trained as well as Al, in accident avoidance...then I knew that the flying public was truly in SAFER HANDS!
AL THAT OFFER GOES BOTH WAYS!!! YOU FOREVER, ARE A VALUED DEAR FRIEND IN BALSA AND THE INVITATION TO YOU AND YOURS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.
Although Carol never has met you...we have been married since 1970 and heard so many of my AL RABE stories...I think she actually thinks you must be some kind of beloved extended family member....AND IN REALITY! YOU ARE! MY BROTHER IN BALSA!
Gads! Do you still have that slide that I took of you holding that FAI Gypsy of Jim Silhavy's and Jim holding that big beautiful scale stunt model of yours, taken at that Motel where a bunch of us flyers were all staying before heading out to the nats, that next morning?
Thinking back....I will never forget the looks on the faces....of all those Noblerized purists...who first got their first glimp of those virtual scale stunt models of Al Rabes as they sat in towering over in size in a line up of so many long lean low slung stunt models of those early days!
AND THEN AGAIN...BETTER YET!
THE STARTLED LOOKS on the faces of these same flyers AFTER they saw just how beautiful Al could fly those models....
and yes, again the look on those same purists faces...when they would walk up the the CHALK BLACK BOARD showing AL Rabe's name with some pretty pretty lofty scores posted in glaring white chalk.
The success and innovations that AL has brought to our Stunt Table, without question have truly left a linage of success's that have gone down in the history books...and by the looks of this new model...that Al has posted. It would appear that our brother in balsa...STILL HAS CHAPTERS YET TO BE FULL-FILLED IN THE STUNT HISTORY BOOKS!
Congratulations Al...May your success and contributions continue, today and into the future.
Welcome aboard the Gruntstunt Sooooooul Train~
ALL ABOARD!!!!
(attached photo is Al checkin out that FAI Gypsy of Jimmy Silhavy.) Al, I wish I could find that favorite old slide of Silhavy holding your model...and you holding his? What made this so funny was the look on Silhavy's face. I caught him in mid sentence with his mouth wide open...saying something about the "wiggleeee-tail" on Al's model? Great daze, huh..Al?
