Just got back from paying a visit to Roger Wildman. He has been working on a new "classic" airplane. He would not let me take pictures of it till today. This is a plane he designed and built in 1966/67, he flew it at the 1967 Nats. This airplanes was pictured in Model Airplane news Sept. or Aug of 67. Its name,"Last Beamer". It was powered by a McCoy .40 using a Tornado 3 blade 9x6 prop.
Here are the stats as of today. Pic #1 is the origanal airplane

wing span 57"
fuse. 40 1/2"
cord, root 10". w/flaps 13"
weight 24.4 oz.
powered by PA .40 light

Allen,

If the finished product is anything near what his Caprice looked like at the Nats last year it will be a knock out (I appreciated his paint scheme after we dealt with Beth's breast cancer, GOD IS GOOD). Tell Roger look forward to seeing it at the Nats, very cool.

James, we (FCM) will have Rogers Caprice on display at our booth at the Toledo Expo. We think his airplane is of that quality, worthy for show in this venue. I'll pass on these sentiments. Thanks.

Could you ask Rodger if the "Subject Airplane" was white with MonoKote trim? Rodger and Wild Bill Netzeband were at Sepulveda Basin back in 66 or '67. I was also there, watching Dennis Schauer fly and marveling on how well his Gladiator performed. Wild Bill suggested to Rodger to let me fly his white I-beamed airplane, he asked me if I would like to do so (I think reluctantly) of course I accepted. This was a turning moment in my stunt life as I realized how well Rodgers airplane flew and all my previous airplanes were not even in the same league.

Can I ask a dumb question? What is the black substance on the spars and elevator? Kinda looks like black tissue that was doped on.

Robert, that is carbon vail, .002 or .003. A great light way to add straight to contest balsa. Not a dumb question at all, that's how we learn.

Tell Roger the old DOC says it is great he is bringing one of his designs to the fore front. I like it. Also, to Robert Jones, the only dumb question is the one that is not asked. As I type this I am still trying to bring into focus the past week of fun I have had. Even tho the demented poodle got most of the attention. Picked up some supplies for building and flying. Great week as far as weather. Will be home by next Friday if I can keep from running over anybody.

Now back to Roger's plane, is it available in plan form or is he doing an article for publication. I know Bobby Hunt our VSC Classic Champion of 2011 is asking for articles for Stunt News.

"Carbon Vail" eh? Never heard of that before, gotta' try it. I've been thinking of sandwiching some sort of carbon fiber between two strips of 1/8 x 1/16 balsa (or whatever size is necessary) and using those for spars.

Is this what's being used?

#CF 621 is what Roger is using, just order it from that web site, or maybe Horizon Hobby.

There are several sites that sell CF veil. Randy Smith has the .2 oz veil at Aero Products which is where I get mine. Maybe CLC, too? I have even found it at the hobby shop.

Nother dumb question... I see what the carbon veil is now.. how is it installed???just doped or must epoxy be used??.. is it light enough to use throughout the fuse to perhaps obtain a harder, smother finish??yet lighter???

Not dumb at all. I use dope to attach it as I think most all others do. Or at least the "paint" they are using for finish, not epoxy.

Yes it is often used to cover the entire fuselage for the exact reasons you mention. It is "harder" and a bit more strength than silkspan. It can be a bit more expensive to cover a full pane with instead of silkspan but the finish is less prone to tiny dings. I think someone has even covered over silkspan on open bays but I haven't tried that, or know how that works.. I believe the majority just cover the wooden structure.

In my little experience, carbon veil has no strength what ever over open areas, even over silkspan. It is great over solid areas as long as you don't back stroke with the brush as I found out. At least on the first coat of dope. I have even put it down on the wood with the poly-urethane clear. For compound curves I rather use light weight fibre glas. Also a great friend no longer with us told me. don't wipe off the dust after sanding. Rusty Brown says the carbon will fill faster with the clear coats and the carbon dust left on the surface.

Attached is a shot of my Caprice that is covered completely with carbon. This model has been flown for 9 years and is still very solid and grain free. There is also a shot of the finished ship. The carbon really makes a great base for painting!

There was recently another discussion about carbon veil, and how to apply. The question was about overlapping the pieces of carbon, and would it show? It is nearly impossible to cover a fuselage in one piece, so many pieces are used. Overlap covers completely after a few coats of clear/filler. Clear dope sticks it down very well.
