I'm not sure how happy Paul is about it, but I'm the  n~ that suggested to Jay Smith that Paul would be a great interview. I'm making a list. Who would like to be on it, and who would you like to see on it?

The Dreaded Canadian Stunt Team would have been inappropriate in the past, but now that they're AMA members 24/7/365, maybe they're ok after all? Many of those guys would be an interesting interview.

My June issue hasn't arrived either, but I'm looking forward to it...for a change.   y1 Steve

Me too Doug...I've been restoring one (on and off) for the past eleven years. I wonder if Paul is going to share with us the kind of car he is restoring?

It is a 1978 Dodge Magnum

It has too many family memories
Daughters cried when I told them I was getting rid of it.

They finally heard it run and asked why it didn't sound like that when they drove it......Duh....

NOW your FOR IT ! .

You can actually get these here MOPARS to Steer on the THOTTLE . Tho they stick to well to go much sideways . Still , Ya could get a few straightlineing the big roundabouts , staying in the outer lane .
Left Right Left . Unfortunately , in the States , it'd be Right , Left, Right .

WHEN you do the R T Trick . A Kiwi tricked up one , boring the lifter bleeds , to run 700 / 7500 with a 265 Hemi Six E 49 , To blow of the hottest aussie Open Modified 351 GT Foed , back around 73 .

We Wopnt Mention the 3 degrees Negative Camber . with the Stock E 49 Suspension . Basically Ute Springs , And 2 point hangers . WOTCHER NEED IS THESE . IF its got the orrible SHORT ones .
Only Picture I can find . Boke gave me $ 50 for a pair , unasked . https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/124133909579?chn=ps&_ul=AU&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-139619-5960-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=124133909579&targetid=1741701787898&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9071700&poi=&campaignid=18278742238&mkgroupid=141565058112&rlsatarget=pla-1741701787898&abcId=9301725&merchantid=119091789&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-4nqjsqo_wIVyE0rCh0gWQTcEAQYASABEgITK_D_BwE

The long rear bump stops , it comes down even , front and rear . Gets rid of the 1.4 turn ( at the steering wheel ) Roll Steer .
I ' just ' got underem with a Rat Tail File . then installed the rear hangers inverted , with the Earilier Small Eye leaf springs .
Putting the spring hangers 90 degrees to the back plate , then gets the 3 degrees nose down pinion angle ,
and she'll hook up and under brakeing pull the rear down near even .

So Itll start to handle like a 1600 escort sport . Or Better . or is it bigger . Best Balanced the Biceps will lift you off the seat in the mountains , without power steer .  %^@

Over There MOPAR Performance has the 0.96 & 1.10 torsion bars ( E49s same platform , 0.87 bars .) used Dual Bars front , which leveled the gravel roads , for the next run .  VD~

ran 1 1/4 Neg Camber and 3 1/4 castor , 1/4 less on the other side , wotll be the other side , there . More of a cruiser  , the ride hight gets crashy if its to low , is why you need the bigger bars ,
Sway Bars F & R , about a 16 or 18 with that rubber aft . And Cop Shocks or suchlike . The WHITE Gabrials are GOOD .

Then you can do the full pattern on a wet skid pan with a stuck throttle , no trouble .  H^^

No, rich Corintian vinyl seats, of which I had to have the front two reupholstered. Very close match to the original. And if you saw it then, it looks a tad better now. The paint never looked like that from the factory. It has been on the road, but I need to get it to an allignment shop. I replaced all the tie rods and it is somewhat in allignnent  but needs a professional touch before I drive it too fast..

I assume that it no longer has the original engine (smog era 318 with a 2-barrel, maybe), but something a bit more robust?

Gottta few Rod Magazines with there project prize 78 Magnum. Stripes n all . 30s Chryslers at Le Mans didnt do to bad , either .

This is pretty near the old ' race spec ' suspension here . Out west youd think the woopdeedoos had ended , and get up to 45 , and find the ground had dropped away . No Problem .

Had Flights of Gallahs wind surfing on it , Dozens of em on it , near . Hundreds in the flights . They seemed to have it figured out . Only get a car a week there back then . Wide open plains & tree line to dive off .

Front view. Spent better part of two weeks getting it "straight". Turned out OK!

No, no 2B 318.
360 4B TBFI, headers and dual exh.

No Brett, not a muscle car. That takes about 500 hp to be muscle.  I have a block out of the donor car that  will be rebuilt to get 350 to 400 hp. No more than that. Still want it to be a good cruising car.

Still needs front end allignment. Changed out some TIRED  tie rod ends, and got it back so it can drive, but I don't want to go over 60 in it at this point.

This is what I call an "automobile". It's just not right to just call it a "car." Think how many people out there that have never had the pleasure of driving something like this? I doubt that there is anything you could buy from the "Big Three" these days that would ride and drive like it. The last car I owned that was in this class was a '76 Ford Torino Elite with 351 Windsor and C-6 automatic. It was a great highway car and such a pleasure to drive! The last thing that I think I ever road in like these was Chris McMillin's ex-wife's '73 Cadillac Brougham 4-door years ago at an early VSC in Tucson. Four of us would fit comfortably in the back seat!. I think your B-17 would have fit in the trunk! I sometimes think about what some of these beauties might be like using some of todays technologies in metallurgy, fuel injection and such.??

I was all set to comment on Model Aviation's decision to expose their readers to someone who actually flies by wires, and who builds his own planes,.  But the thread is now all about restoring old cars, so it's too late.

Now, maybe I'll tell about my 1963 MBZ restoration?

Whats a MBZ , will the alloy V8 dropp in it .  S?P  ;D

That ' Auto Mo-bile ' by the way .  ;)

Indeed , Yr Average stunt ship should fit in the boot of a Hartop , as they say . Dunno if the Magnum or Dusters boots as big ? Should fit 3 or 4 easy , actually . WHICH WAS THE IDEA , In the first place .

AND you can strech out across the back seat , for a nap . No trouble .

Thinking , Alignment varies to suit shocks & such , a touch . Point Being , you can fine tune the road holding . Rather'n the tail wagging the dog . Theyll hold attitude , into a curve , and you can get the boot in at the apex .
Earlier  ones ,  the body roll - the outer front'd toouch the bumpstop , and load up that tyre . So theyed rock & plow , on & off  . pushed . Whereas you can eliminate that no sweat , then you can get the boot in instead Bloke racing a 360 Charger ( the aussie one , Vs a V8 Falcon & a V8 Holden ( G.M. ) the right of the straight , around the ton
He went through touched it once . once or twice .
Twice everytime but that ,
and when it didit thrice .
There at that  half the two hour production race . pilot has to ease off each time and bring it on as it settles .  >:( Through here , into a tighter left .
Bathurst at the Bottom of Conrod , they Do it hard twice , plowing . every time .I wouldnt want to wait till I was on the straight , to gas it !
They woulda won if theyed sorted that , theyd save whole seconds ALL OVER the PLACE .

The V8 is lower C G & Cr of mass further aft . Muscle . 145 mph ? Hemi six . Stock spec. Seen a channeled one he said ran 160 , timed . Bigger carbs & such .
440 is 500 easy on Gas . 1000 on methanol . 2000 on Nitro . A Black one , anyway . But Methanol 7 10 5 nitro should be good for 1000 or 1100 . safely . Horsepower . Aim was 250 NZLSR .
The Tail heavy 911 when he tried it swapped ends . He coulda ended in the canal . Rough Road , Contact front skewed it flicked and spat loose . WHEREAS the Nose Heavy ' Dodge ' ll Run straight !

And I thought a D B was a aston Martin .

Youd think It'd be compulsary for everyone to own a real car . These modern things are mostly optically repungeant ! Largely comercial marketing intrests get the policy makers in a arm lock , Darn statistics .

Id've thought Paul wouldve done it electric ! .  S?P  just kidding .  ;D But Its a hold  out if the hysterical faschists demand electrickery . plenty of conversions've been done .
Saw a 61 Tank Fairlane Two door  on the mountain months back . thought " That'd carry enough batteries to get across the Nullabor ".  :)

Theyre like anything built to a price . But it was spent on sound mechanicals & design .

It just you CAN refine them to pretty much match anything in its class , Road Holding . Beat them even . For tuppane relitively . Theyre set up stock to ensure the drivers cautious , But still outranked GM & Ford in troad manners here . the 81 R T S ( radial tuned suspension )

Check out His Holden sedan test . Youd think He'd have to go underground for six months , to avoid their Hit Men !  S?P " Road-testing the 1974 Holden HJ Premier | RetroFocus "

God Bless Fabric Radials .

Finally clicked our Holden Torana , the later ones , is your Chevy Vega . Tweaked up 308 5 litre race homlogation A9X and things . Thje little three litre beat the six litre fords , in the damp . so There .  :-X

Bathurst 1971 Part 1 , Bathurst 1971 Part 2 ,

The XG ute , 1992 ! has reinforced front rails , wot stop the twitch , like E rolls it down the fence , in 71 . Mopar Chassis is way better design .

For anyone who has owned a Mercedes-Benz, the registration  papers identify it as "MBZ"

Mine was a 1963 190, completely restored, which met a sad end in 1989 following the Loma Prieta earthquake (a story for another time)
91 years, but still going

1000kb total and 10 pics max, last I heard. Not sure what the problem would be, except too many attachments.

Is that a "pro stunt" finish, Sir? What sort of paint was used? All butyrate? Or 2 part topcoat?  ;) Steve

Basecoat, clearcoat

Sanded all thr old paint off to the bare metal. Then epoxy primer. Filler as necessary...which took lots of hours to get right, guide coat to get there followed by urethane primer. Then more guide coat to be certain it was "flat". Finished up with another toot of urethane primer. A light sanding to be sure there were no "things" in it. Thrn the base coat followed by the clear. That's all.  Well, there was the final 2000 to 3000 sanding and buffing. Was fun, but very time consuming.

Is that the same car you picked me up at the motel you were driving, looks way better now.  FYI: in 1977 to 1979 I was working at  Dodge/Chrysler Dealership and that’s where I got the name of Magnum for my new stunt Ship, yeah I was the new car Manager and I drove the SE version Red in color.  Pretty nice car but mine had the 360 engine so it was ok but needed more power lol.

Yup, same car.  Both daughters used this as their first car.
Yes  stock 78 360 was not strong.  Plan  on rebuilding motor in the future bringing compression up to 10:1 ish, cam, and nice heads. Will be sufficuent for a highway cruiser.

Aw , comon Paul . Thats the ' AERO ' shell they introduced for N A S C A R  .

Cop Brakes , Springs n Shocks & it'd start to steer . To Turn the Rolls Canardley into a Turbo R Bentley , the doubled the anti roll  / sway bars rate , and doubled the shock rate .
Saw a 959  or whatever and sneered at him for you . Youd have to cut the roof of , to get a F2B plane in THAT . And on a bumpy road at 200 it'd shake all his fillings out .

Richard Petty & Dale Inman compare the '79 NASCAR Championship car with the General Tire Monte Carlo  . on utube , theyve built a similar road car .
Rear Steer & Front Steer , thyre into there , are what Im on about . Get the front holding and the rear nailed down , it'll steer pretty good .
Still a lot of car to hang onto , but they ran standard rails & uprights etc , at 200 , so 100s only half speed .  S?P

Get the rake and trim right , and rolling freely , the economy is pretty good . Maximum efficency .  ;D

according to this bloke , you drop it into neutral at 90 , anything wil then show you how its going & for how long . Some on a hill'd keep accelerteing . You dont need to use it , but you know its there .
Its more refinement than butchery . A Lot of people think a steel crank 340 is THE Motor to have .
