PT -19 --- Check those lines!!!

We had a new guy come out the field this past weekend and he had a brand new PT-19 with a Evo .36. Nice looking setup.

But the lines were not crimped that came with the kit! He said there was nothing in the instructions that told him to crimp them and he did not know that they needed to be. The thimbles were set the wire was pulled thru the sleeve, already to crimp but either end of the lines were not crimped.
Then yesterday Kelly Wilson went by the LHS and checked the two that were on the shelf. Same thing. He called the vendor and they said that the lines should be crimped.

So double check the lines if you have one still in the box.

The leadouts need to be wrapped/cripmed as well. On my PT-19 the leadouts were only crimped at the bellcrank.

Actually I don't think they're supposed to be crimped. They are assembled with CA in the sleeves. I would crimp them, but they have been flown like that and lived through it.......

Well when he called HH they told him they should have been crimped from the factory. When I expected them the sleeve slid right up the line and the thimble came right off in my hand.

I believe you're right. If I rememeber correctly this was mentioned in the long PT-19 thread, but I have a feeling it has been lost. FWIW, My leadouts came apart so easily (they were not crimped, but were glued) that I didn't have to cut the ends off to redo them. It's a quick fix, hopefully the bellcrank connections hold!

Hey All;

I'm the guy with the PT-19 Paul mentioned. Mea Culpa for not crimping the ferrules on the lines. 30+ years ago when I last built and flew C/L, crimping them was the norm. I inspected them when I got the kit, and noticed no crimps. Tugged on the lines, they felt secure. Looked at the instructions with the kit, nothing about crimping them. I remember reading on this and another forum about using CA glue in the ferrules in lieu of crimping, so I assumed they were adequate out of the box. Paul and I gave them a good look before flying the airplane, but obviously they weren't secured as the came loose after flying only 1/2 of a circle, with disasterous results!

The good news is that I called HorizonHobby/Hangar9 the day after the crash, and after telling them about what happaned, I was told to box up the wrecked PT-19, Evo.36, send it back to them, and a new kit with engine while be sent as an exchange!

Also, I got my sons (12 and 15) flying this week on the old FliteStreak Trainer that Paul gave us several months ago for us to rebuild and use as a beater!

Well John's was not the only one. Two more ARF's were at the LHS and were the same way. Kelly W. was at the field the day John's went in. He took the lines out of the kits at the LHS and took them home to fix them.

AllGot an e-mail from Hangar 9 this morning (Wendsday, 10 June) that the replacement PT19 kit with Evo.36 has already been shipped ! Great service, so far.
