US Army 1967 - 1970   Vietnam Jan. '68 to Jan.'69  Tet was real fun two weeks after I got into country. Guess what my favorite channel is.............the Military Channel. Also I like the History Channel especially when they run the Dog Fight programs. OBTW, I only build US military war birds for stunt. No Japs, or German planes. I have to admit some of the lines on the enemy's planes are pretty nice. Still they were the offenders and were used to kill many of our fellow country men. About 650 B 17s went down in one day over Germany. With 10 crew members per ship.........that's a lot of men that didn't make it back home. We lost over 57,000 in Vietnam in 10 years and I am not too happy about that either. Still it was my patriotic duty to of proudly served my country. Well back to doing some paint prep work on my next Oriental............:o)

It bear's repeating:

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Have a great Veteran's Day guys and gals.

A slice of Our Greatest Generation...  The woman is my grandmother, Frances Scott (deceased 1962) who had to raise 2 boys as a single mom during the depths of the Great Depression.  At one time, they had to seek shelter via a room in the county jail.  Then she had to send her sons to war.

My dad (deceased 2001), shown on the left, enlisted in the US Army's 17th Airborne Division and served in England, Belgium and Germany during WWII.  Transfered in 1947 to the USAF, he went on to serve many CONUS stations, Korea and Vietnam.

His older brother (deceased 2009) on the right, had enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served for 30 years, most notably with the Marine 1st Brigade, 2nd Marine Division and saw action in Guadacanal, Saipan, Okinawa and later, also Korea and Vietnam.

Both my wife and I served in peacetime and are immensely proud of the sacrifices those who served before us made.

I see you were in NATTC Memphis in the late 70's - was the Navy Memphis Tailhooks model club still in existence then?  I burned a lot of Missile Mist in '59 between the clubhouse/hobby shop and the little chapel next door on the south side!  They were probably replaced by the time you served there.

Although I have never had the honor or priveledge of serving our Country, I do love and support our military both past and present .

That said, I would like to say thank you to all those men and women for standing in the gap for those of us Americans that did not, or in my case, could not take a stand for freedom, beit during times of peace or times in conflict.

I am especially thankful for the safe return of my son (Walter III) that did serve, and pray for the safe return of all our troops still in harms way.

In addition I am also thankful to those that took part in all the behind the scenes jobs making the tools needed to supply our military, we couldn't be as strong of a Country without them either.

Thank you to all and God Bless.

What Is A Veteran?
A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to, and including his life."

Served in Vietnam 1967-1968 based at Army air base Camp Holloway, Pleiku (Central Highlands)
119th Assault Helicopter Company (Crocs UH-1C gunships and Gators UH-1H slicks)
MOS(military occupation specialty) 67N2F: UH-1 Huey helicopter Crew chief/Door gunner
Combat Highlights:
(1) Battle for Hill 875. Flew in reinforcements/ammo/water for surrounded 173rd Airborne troops and pulled out wounded/dying/dead.
(2) Ho Chi Min Trail in Laos/Cambodia. Inserted and pulled out LRRPs (long range reconnaissance patrols) who called in B52 bomber strikes on hidden NVA convoys. Our company lost more choppers/men in the 2 months doing this than in 10 months in Vietnam.
(3) Tet Offensive. Started on my birthday. The NVA really didn't have to throw me such a big party with so many fireworks!

Well, Clancy was in there before me, but I had the requisite two year stint from Aug 1961-Aug 1963.  US Army Corps of Engineers, MOS Refrigeration Specialist.  Stationed in Presidio of San Francisco, ASCOM City, Korea and Korat, Thailand.  Flew a Flite Streak with an OS 35 Max III in Korea on home brewed FAI fuel, with ingredients bought from locals!  It ran....and I didn't ask any more questions.

FREEDOM ISN'T FREE.

Blessings Allen

I don't normally come in on political discussions, (and this is really more about people than politics) but I don't think I've ever seen this better put.
My appreciation and thanks to the guys who do and have done this job on our behalf.

I have finally got around to trying to catch up on the forum.  I have to thank all the gentlemen and ladies that have served.  Some had horror stories and some had good stories.   It was hard watching my friends and class mates going off to do their tour of duty.  I spent two days at the Armed Forces  Building in Kansas City MISSOURI taking tests, being poked at and then told to go back to the farm.  It was a downer as I was trying the Army and the guy behind the desk said I was 4F and not to try any of the other branches.   Again my hats off to those who have served' H^^ H^^
