Title: Proto plans? .21, 'B'.
Post by: Mike Lauerman on March 22, 2013, 03:25:49 PM
In all my searches for plans, I seldom see anything for Protos.
I am especially interested in 'B' Proto, but .21 size would also be desirable for my Taipan engine.
Is there a 'special place' for these to be found?  Chris McMillan maintains that the Protos look like airplanes, and I'm inclined to agree.

(My 'B' T/R planes are coming along)

The last .29 proto I recall being published was in MAN about '57, and used a Fox .29R (bathtub intake), I believe. "Fast Miler" or something like that, and I believe the designer was "Rankin" or similar. I designed and built 4ea. .29 protos of my own, all monoline. You're not going to use 2 lines, are you?

Chris Sackett published his .21 Proto "Blondie" in Model Aviation some years ago. Tom Knoppi (F2C Tom) and I wrote the .21 Proto rules, and allowed for a handicap system for using monoline, to be adjusted as required to give parity, based on experience over a season or two of use. We gave the rules to Chris, who was NASS President at the time, and the rules were then FUBAR'd to be 2 line only, so we quit  work on our two planes. Well, that and Tom lost the drawings he'd made!

You know, of course, that any B T/R design is probably perfectly legal for either B Proto or .21 Proto?   H^^ Steve

Bob:  Thanks, I'd like to see what you have.

Steve:  Is there a rough copy of the outline of the rules you wrote for Proto? Just to get parameters...
It was Chris Sackett's article that inspired me to chase the Proto design...That Blondie is beautiful!
Two line, when I do fly it I will 'warm up slowly'. (I'm 70, and not as fast as my regular hot rods any more, let alone a Spinning rocket!)

Mike:  Aha! There ARE some... Thanks, that's what I think I'm talking about...and I do see the similarity to Team Racers.
Protos that I saw seemed more...long, and 'scalish'...generally higher aspect ratio than some B/TR.
I appreciate all the answers here!

Mike, I looked on the NASS website www.clspeed.com (http://www.clspeed.com) for the rules, and didn't find them. It's possible they might be in the AMA site, but they are not on Flying Lines, 'cause that's the first place I looked. I don't understand how anybody can expect contestants to build planes and show up at the big contests when you can't find the rules. You might ask on the Speed Forum here and see if anybody can post a link or the rules as a .pdf or .txt file.  H^^ Steve
