On Friday went over to my friend Marks' place to setup his
Abernathy Special. He bought it when Abernathy closed the doors
some time ago.
It is powered by an Enya .40 (4 s) which has the same design flaw
as some OS Surpass engines (only worse).
The glow plug is located at the front of the cylinder head and tilts
toward the prop. I have run this engine before, but this time I
whacked myself with the prop while removing the glow igniter.
Oh well......

Rex, that looks like some serious medical attention there, maybe it's time to revert to a pair of individual crocodile clips, so that you can remove from the rear.
Get well soon.
-
OUCH! I sure hope that mends up soon. I've taken a few whacks from props over the years. Mainly from angry little diesels which get the top of your finger because you can't get out of the way fast enough!

For the Scale C/L & R/C guys someone sold a remote plug module for the glow plug. Sullivan??? Two wires led from the remote to the engine & its glow plug. Hide the remote or put it somewhere safe. Cheaper in the long run for a number of reasons.
This one is fancier & more complex than I remember.

Do you need a dust cover??

Thats the result of playing with model airplanes with large engines.
Never happen with 049 or .15s.
Hope it gets better fast.

Further to John Craig's suggestions, Hobby King R-GLOW-D-N.
It's cheaper than the others and available from the US warehouse.

Per other suggestions -- remote that thing! Forcibly if necessary. Ten remote glow driver setups cost less than one emergency room visit.

Go Electric.

Remote or cloths pin type.

Anything is better than going to the hospital.

It's a little late now, but I strongly recommend a remote adapter like the Horizon Hobby one pictured. I used one from the get-go on my Enya 46 4-stroke with the plug pointed forward, an accident waiting to happen. Except in your case, where it already did. That looks like some serious injuries, never have seen anything like that after a prop strike. Hope it heals soon and well.
Just for the record, my own personal worst was from a TeeDee .020 on the front of a quarter-A free flight. Released the lever on the DT timer and put my left hand right through the prop arc. 30,000 rpm on a tiny prop will do plenty of damage.
-
Yea it will heal up over time. As stated get one of the remotes or go with the old alligator clips. If you do make sure one wire is shorter so they don't short out.

Hello Rex1945:
I bet that the prop was not made of wood. I do not like to use plastic props for the damage that they can inflict.
Get well soon,

Unfortunately, nothing can solve the problem of doing stupid things.
The plane belongs to a friend of mind that I advised to buy a remote connector, which he did. When we went to use it, the
igniter attach end came loose and I couldn't get the (McDaniel) "twist lock" igniter off. So, we removed it and mounted the
glow driver in the "known dangerous" position.
So, it was really a question of being off my game and too anxious to get him in the air. Resting the side of the igniter against
anything metal on the engine would have solved the problem. After all we had the luxury of two people to get the plane
in the air. I usually fly alone and don't depend on the crew when I could benefit.......
Oh, well. He offered to drive me to the hospital.

PS : It was a Revolution's Remote Glow Plug Adapter : https://jet.com/product/product/0ae5317518cd44e5ac8e26d59f844160?jcmp=pla:ggl:toys_games_a3:toys_remote_control_toy_accessories_a3_other:na:na:na:na:na:2&code=PLA15&k_clickid=debffe3d-3706-4aac-ad7d-b22dbe4c0ae8&kpid=0ae5317518cd44e5ac8e26d59f844160&gclid=CjwKEAjw4s2wBRDSnr2jwZenlkgSJABvFcwQhc_y6NNWe_DaOSe2A7kmoB4FwUcPfwOcc-wY_tx1kBoCn57w_wcB
These things break quite easily when you tighten the nut on the remote bracket.

True. I haven't done anything injuriously stupid for quite a while, but that doesn't mean there isn't something lurking around the next corner, waiting for me.
