Prowler Maiden Flight ViDEO))))))
« on: May 25, 2014, 07:59:21 AM »
On a last minute whim I drove out to the flying field yesterday with the car filled with planes.
Crashed the new 1/2 A Snapper due to not tightening the bell crank bolt due to my haste to get out and fly. Flew the Ringmaster Jr a couple of times. Put up the Bi-Slob. I have a new Fox .35 I need to put on it.
A couple of the Piston Poppers where there and we re-aquainted ourselves. Glen put up a plane and did his pattern in some high winds. I was inspired!
They left. Now I was alone. Had to put the Prowler up...had to. Had to.
Finally got the guts to put the Prowler up in the air. Wow.....what a feeling to fly a true stunt plane. I was just going to do circles but I had to go for a couple of maneuvers.
I have the Prowler set up conservatively and will keep it that way a while as I increase my skills.

Way to go, Shug!  You got that first flight in successfully.  Now you can get some club members to help you start trimming the Prowler and doing more!

Good job!

Shug, you are having way too much fun.   Might fix that stooge before you lose part of a prop though.   The plane looks great in the air.  Thanks for the video.   By the way I didn't count the number of landings at the end. LL~ LL~ LL~

Thanks Bill. It seems fairly well trimmed so for now I will just fly and practice loops, lazy's and go for inverted in due time. Went out today but way windy.
There are a few fellers that I can coax into helping me trim and fly.
Thanks for watching

Thanks Paul.....it was truly fun and exciting.
I have a three year plan to get good at this. This year is build, crash, re-build, fly and so forth ad infinitum.

You got to have fun to spread fun!
I did jack-up my landing gear to get more clearance. Went today to fly and put up the Snapper and Ringmaster Jr.
Super windy...did some back-pedaling! Haaaa
Did not risk the Prowler today.
On the video was three separate flights just to make the video hopefully more watchable for non-CL'ers. Got a few of my subscribers intrigued. They want a beginners tutorial so that I shall do. Maybe a way to rope a few in and give something to the hobby.
Thanks for always commenting and watching.

Good going there, Mister! I liked the cartwheel...nice touch. I'm with Bill...trim that puppy out before you get too sporty with it. Are the wings level upright and inverted? Engine run the same speed through insides and outsides? It looks like it doesn't turn as tight outside as inside...fix that! Try different props, too.

You need a spring to flip the upright part of the stooge down...looks like a torsion spring would work.  H^^ Steve

Got out to fly tonight....arrived at the field minus my handles and lines......DRATS!
But another flyer (John C.) was there doing his patterns and loaned me a handle and lines. So I even got some consecutive inside loops and worked on opening them all up with some coaching from John. The plane seemed fairly trimmed as he got to watch it. I felt a bit more confident tonight as the wind was nil. Any mistakes are me and not the Prowler so far.
John said wings were level. I have not flown a lap inverted yet but will soonest. Engine was running mighty fine tonight. So happy. Came home elated. Even did consecutive lazy 8's with more control. Having someone there was a big help.
I'll get to some props stuff but trying to go easy for me. Running a 10-6 on there.
And I did oil up those stooge hinges.
So much to do and so much fun to have.
Can't wait to get into a contest when the time is right.
Thanks for watching and posting.

Remember the lazy 8's are the best way to get into inverted flying.   Just keep stretching out the inverted part as you come over the top of the inside loop.   Isn't it great we have modelers to help us out when we need it.

Yessir))))) for sure that. I got some inverted flights in today on my Bi-Slob. Now I am ready to go inverted on the Prowler.
I think I am I think. ;D
It is nice to have others at the field for sure especially if they have way more experience.
Thanks.

I'm watching. Good work Shug. Best way to not crash a stunter... have a plan before you take off and stick to it, master it. If you get wild and start freelancing spontaneous tricks, it'll make you pay. Ask me how I know. Glad you have some coaches.

I saw one of your tight loops almost cut the engine off. Use the whole sky and learn where your 45 degree mark is. But use even more sky as a beginner, up to 60 deg and pull out higher than the experts.

Sight down the lines as you trace your shapes. To make the loops big and round takes light control input on the slower up side and heavier control input on the faster down side. Make sure there is ZERO flex in your control rod. And now consider you're reading advice from a recent beginner Lol.
Good luck

Make up a pin release stooge. Wire loop on the tail wheel kinda thing. If the prop had shed a blade on that takeoff the vibration would have torn the nose off. A chalk line reel is perfect for the release line.

That is all good stuff to hear. I am getting less panicky as I keep at it and will heed your great advice.
Fun and thrilling trying to progress in this control line quest.....

My Prowler does not have much ground clearance at all. I tried jacking up the landing gear. That helped but it is still a wee wiggly. I appreciate the good advice and yeah....a prop break would have made my drive home long and sad.

I wish I had taken a picture so many years ago of my stooge release that I created as a pre teen.   Was three pieces of angle brackets with a spring to hold the release pin.   Lost count of how many flights I made with that as Dad was still laid up after back surgery.

Shug, great flight... What engine & muffler is on the Prowler? Great sound, doesn't lag in corners...

Very inspiring buzz, and the landing in the wind...well done.   The cartwheel is something I think I recall...now, how long ago...I think before I was doing 'loops?'
