Title: Prop Question
Post by: Joe Messinger on March 14, 2007, 01:41:13 PM
Hello,

I just finished putting together a Brodak Cardinal.  I installed an OS LA .46.

Anyone out there have this combination and can recommend a prop that works well?  I have a Top Flite 11/4 on the engine right now but haven't flown it as yet.  The carbon props are out of my price range but thought there might be something else that would do a good job.

Also, what RPM range would be best for the prop you might recommend on the LA .46?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions offered.

Joe

Hi Joe,

At one time, the APC 12.25X3.75 was a hot prop for the LA 46.  Trimmed to about 11 3/4.

Joe,
The OS .46LA on my Cardinal works fine with a wood Zinger 11x5. Sorry I can't help with the rpm figure because I've always set it by ear.

You can also run it on a 12x4 N bolly pitched at about 3.5 ,it gets it into the high RPM set up that I have spoke of previously, its still a 424 break but it softens the break considerably.you can fly on lines up to 65 eye to eye because you are allowing the engine to make more power and controlling the speed both 4 and 2 cycle with the low pitch prop.
A Revup 12 x 4 also works fairly well since you don't want a carbon fiber prop.

I run a 11-6 onmy 46 on calm Days and 11-5 on windy days. You might ask why a low pitch on a windy day and my excus is I don't like the plane to wind up on me. considering my age it is harder for me to keep yp than it used to be. It's called the old mans catch up syndrome. oh well you get the message. This combination also works well on the Cardinal profile.
