Title: Prop colors
Post by: Paul Taylor on May 17, 2009, 01:33:54 PM
I remember someone talking about soaking a prop in dye to change the color.

Anyone know if this is safe and can be done with APC props?

pretty sure it was for the old nylon props - I dont think it will work on the APC as they are a different composite

It actually will work for APC props, though its not as effective as with the old top flite nylon props. I beleive that RIT dye and hot water are the secret. I havent bothered with mine personally but I have seen many that were done. perhaps doing a search on here and SSW would yeild an answer?

Paul, I have dyed several APC props black using Rit dye, I heat the dye almost to  boil, then put the props in for about 20 minutes, this seems to be enough time for the color to take.
  Hope that this helps...

Danny Dirt dyes his APC props, tho I can't recall what color they are dyed. Pond Scum Green, maybe.  LL~ Steve

Steal some of your best girlfriend's "Lime Green" fingernail polish and paint the prop tips just like your toe nails.    LL~

I used a half gallon milk jug for the smaller props and three 4 1/2" tall tin cans silicon glued together for the bigger props. I brought a couple of pots of water to a boil, poured it in, mixed in a packet of Rit dye, added the props and let them stand overnight. I wasn't sure if you could get too much water and have a solution that was too weak so I tried to keep the containers on the small side. A time or two an old prop would have a spot that didn't take and I figured it had something on it I didn't get cleaned off. I only tried black.
