Title: Prop' Pitch Guage : Does anyone Sell them today ?
Post by: Robin_Holden on February 08, 2012, 04:24:13 AM
Greetings all.

Does anyone produce a pitch guage ?

Could we persuede John [Brodak] perhaps  ?

His products are always 'top' quality.

Robin.

Prathers are the best - however are no longer in production.

They occasionally come up on Ebay - the last 2 I followed went for close to $ 300

Grady , very much obliged for your contribution.

Before I buy one of these protractors , may I ask ...... Are they simple to use  ?

Pretty important to those of us at a 'certain age' !

Regards ,

Robin.

Propeller Pitch Calculations

To calculate propeller blade angle from pitch or pitch from propeller blade angle, use one of the calculators below. You can use any consistent measurements for pitch and distance from the hub, mm, cm or inches as long as you use them in both places. Answers are correct to two decimal places.

The first calculator outputs blade angle from prop pitch and distance from the centre of the hub.
Distance from Center of Prop = 5
Prop Pitch    = 5.26
Blade Angle = 9.5°

The second calculator outputs prop pitch from blade angle and distance from the centre of the hub.
Distance from Center of Prop = 5
Blade Angle = 9.5°
Prop Pitch    = 5.26

Additionally required is correct height riser block (this is cut @ 2'') to bring assembly into protractor range.
Protractor may be set to read @ 90° from shown and that will require a different size riser as well.

I also have the templates for a Hooptee gauge. I used one of those until I found a Prather.

There was a thorough article on building a pitch gage and carving props in Flying Models about a year ago.

Hi Randy,
Just tinkering / building a M. Pratt Force profile (with Moki 51 power) up here in the north valley. Also, hanging out @ Esteban and enjoying copious shade plus scenic South Mountain off in the distance with mostly local combat cats.

BTW
tan a° x 2∏r = pitch U got.

Sending best and having fun,
Grady

Nice to hear from you.  Come down and fly with us in Tucson some time.

All the best to you my friend!

It may sound a bit picky on my part but a short comment on reply nr 11. The picture shows the prop mounted to the front face of the hub and as these hubs are seldom parallel, one might get more honest blade to blade readings if the blade were mounted against the face that registers against the engine prop driver.

reasonable point and something to watch out for Deuce but with the prop that way up, it is easy to see that the protractor blade is in correct contact with the back of the prop balde.

Mr Goodworth

Attach a plate to the top of the block pictured with enough overhang to mount prop from lowerside and you are back to the easy position and referenced of the correct hub face.

And Man, can I get really picky now. When the USAF Folks were trying to make an acceptable facsimile of a B-36 mechanic out of me, we were taught that the face of  the blade was the flat side and the back of  the blade was the curvy part. And don't tell me that is backward cause the props are on the back side of that long wing. ;)

Last Stunt Contest I ever flew was in 1959 and in those days I bought a prop and ran it cause I broke as many airplanes as I did props. I tend to be a realist  and understood that, as in bowling and golfing, I was as good after learning the pattern that existed then, as I was ever gonna be.

The 50 odd years since, I have spent my time in the Speed Circle. Those years and 18 National Records later, I am still trying to sort things out. We do go to great lengths to get our dream of the correct prop. Know we will never get there but can show reasons for what we do. Any change in engine strength demands a change in the prop. Blade tracking and blade angle from blade to blade seem to be important. I can talk props a long time.

A bridge fixture for an APC (especially with all the molding draft) is a nice idea.

Simple solutions are usually the most effective.

Keep on thinking.
