Help with "Green Box" Nobler please?
« on: May 13, 2014, 08:32:52 PM »
I just acquired a green box Nobler in need of some TLC. The forward turtledeck is gone. Can anyone provide a full size pattern for the turtle deck formers from the cockpit to the firewall?

I also have a question, should the control rod to the elevator be located in the inner or outer hole in the flap horn?

I appreciate any help I can get, Thanks

Andrew, thanks for the link. Interesting that another Nobler plan at that site has it constructed to fly clockwise. Unfortunately after reviewing the plans I have determined my project plane is NOT a "Green Box" Nobler but a Gieseke (sp?) Nobler. The hunt goes on

From the Top Flight kit?  I just looked at my Gieseke ("blue box") Nobler plans, and they don't show the formers.  Nor do the bits of punched-out sheet in the kit seem to have the ones that the formers were punched out of.

Nose and turtle decking was molded balsa, with this really odd scheme that had you whack the molded stuff in two on the centerline, then glue it back together at what used to be the outside edges.  It took me fussin', fittin' and cussin' to get that all together.

The nose decking stays at a bit over 3/4" (25/32, if you want to be picky) until the former ahead of the wing.  Then it tapers down to match the spinner.

Personally, if I were in your position I'd just follow Bob Hunt's balsa molding process.  Free-hand the plug to a pleasing shape.  Then start bending balsa.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I have the TF Gieseke Nobler kit and the plans.  If you can't find plans or the info you need, I can have my plans copied and send them to you.

He needs the outlines of the formers, which aren't on the plans.

Interesting that another Nobler plan at that site has it constructed to fly clockwise.

George flew clockwise, but it works both directions if the pilot is suitably selected!

The Gieske Nobler has a significant dorsal fin in front of the fin, extending forward to the canopy. The turtle deck tapers downward about the same amount, resulting in the top edge of the dorsal being pretty close to horizontal. Show us some pictures, before, during, and after the restoration!  H^^  Steve

I have already smoothed out the fuse to accept the new turtle deck. I'm a master at "figure 9's" and I hope to improve my skills with this plane. Not going to try to make it too pretty, just want to fly. It's drilled for a Fox 35.

You can see where the formers were (parts remain). Interesting that the plans posted above (Thanks John Stiles!)  show the rear turtledeck carved from a block. It certainly has that extended dorsal fin, must be a lot of changes in the plane over the years. It looks like my pushrod question has been answered, I think that is the reason this plane is in the condition it's in.

Use a 1/2" block.  The Gieseke Nobler is just a modified green box Nobler, so most of what you're looking for can be used off the TF kit plans.

The attached PDF is the early plan for the Gieseke Nobler.

I think that's probably more like it...the Tom Dixon re-drawn lightened plan shows a 3/4" block hollowed out, but if you wanted to make it 1/2"  it should work out ok. y1
