Profile electric conversions - Flight Streak
« on: September 03, 2023, 07:01:23 PM »
I've been away from the forum for a while. Still doing some flying. And getting into doing some development work again on models. My 4/4 activities has been keeping me busy but I decided to slow my intake down some.

Around the area there are a lot of old profile models and I've a few guys ask how tough it would be to convert and exiting airplane. Well, not hard actually but often are kind of hack jobs. I'm doing a Peacemaker and the guys I fly with have some Flight ARFs so I put together some criteria and made a pod that can go on about any profile model. It took us about an hour to do the conversion. One criteria is it must be simple bolt on. Another is it needs to be front mounted. There are lots of opinions around about which is better and I have both. The primary reason I elected to do the front mount is survivability. The rear mount motors take a real beating when they nose plant on hard stuff. The front mount motors typically need a new shaft and possibly the front bearing. Oh another reason and by far the best reason, I think they look better.

Here's a couple photos of the flight streak conversion. I'm going to make a mount for the ESC as well.

Another view. I guess I need to make the photos smaller.

Interesting design, would welcome an opportunity to see (no pun intended) the 'see through' image of that pod.

I assume there is a gap between the outer diameter of the spinner and the pod that allows cooling air in to the motor (it looks minimal in the photos).  Similarly are there ducts on the aft end of the pod to allow air to exit?

Yes it is an annular inlet. The bell is about 1/16 larger in diameter than the spinner. The area of the anulus is the same are the area of the motor inlet. The ducting is more for space than cooling and to provide structure. The motor need to move out some for CG.

I did another conversion. This time to a Ringmaster for the Fly-A-Thon. It worked very well. Here's a couple photos.

Actually that isn't my doing. Doug Burright built this airplane and it's been around for a while. I talked him into letting me convert it to electric for the Fly-A-Thon. The electric pod basically bolts in place. We had to cut a bit of the original web away for motor clearance. It took about an hour to accomplish. We put 140 flights on it in two days. 100 of them on the second day.

A few views from the CAD.

Would it be possible to get the file for this? I have a few planes I'd like to use it on. STEP file would be best. Please?  H^^

As I recall, short nose planes like that were a bit jumpy and could do some pretty tight turns.  Lengthening the nose moment via your pod will probably give a bit more stability and smoother turns.  It does add a good look to the plane.

I make items in order to support my interests. As you are aware, the subscription cost of the CAD software is not trivial and I cover the expense via selling my creations. The price I would put on the STL files would be based upon the potential income I would generate selling 100 sets. I would be happy to sell you a couple of sets of them though and you'd join a group of happy folks. If you are interested, send me a PM.

I’m almost finished my electric powered Flight Streak. I am using the Mark Wood engine pod, battery and esc mounts. I lengthen the aft end of the fuselage 2 inches. The balance point now is half way between the leading edge and the spar. I installed a Climb and Dive timer. The test flights will be soon.

There's a couple different materials that can work. The most durable is Nylon X or other brands of CF impregnated Nylon. The trouble with that is it doesn't paint very well. PETG CF is an option and it paints well. Tom Morris mounts use PC which is pretty tough to get good results with. I've done a couple PC mounts but am moving to the PETG CF for things that need to be painted. I will sell a kit for $35 shipping included. Motor mount battery mount and ESC mount.
