Has anyone kitted a profile chipmunk?

To my knowlege, there hasn't been a profile Chipmunk kitted. However, it's not too hard to to build a profile version of the Sig Chipmunk using one of their wing kits. A member of our long defunct C/L club did that exact thing about 15 years ago. Flew great with a Dixon Fox 40.

In the early-mid '90s Custom Models of Arlington, TX had a profile
Chipmunk kit. This was a foam wing version and if I remember correctly
it may have been just slightly larger than the Sig version. I remember
flying one that Bill Hopkins, who was Custom Models, gave to Doug and I
with a Super Tiger 46. I don't think he made very many of these kits
and it would probably be a real challenge to find one.

Thanks for the replies I was thinking of the bubble canopied version aka the Art Scholl Super Chipmunk. .35 to .50 size.

HI David,

For that scenario, I would go with Clint's suggestion. A Sig wing kit and a copy of their plans should be all you need. The wing is a proven performer so a profile built with it should be very good. Go with something like a .46LA for the engine.

I did just what has been suggested for a beginner to intermediate airplane, built a SIG Chipmonk wing and used the profile from the plans to build a profile fuse for it, everything else like the kit dimensions, Model flew well. Mike Pratt commented to me on it at the time and I took that as great praise! Still do! For my next model after that, I built another SIG Chipmunk wing and put it in a profile fuse that had a Rabe style upright engine mount as per his articles on the Mustunt series and shaped to look like an ME-109. Had a Randy Smith Magnum .40 in both models. The Messerschmidt is still flying 20 years later. The Chip wing is an easy wing to build that builds up fairly light, straight and strong. The question is, does SIG still make the Chimpunk wing kit? I'd bet that you could get a foam wing for the SIG Chimpunk if you looked in the right place, if that interests you. And I do have a SIG wing kit that's available. Holla.

It's listed on their web site, although you have to dig a bit to find parts.

That's interesting, Steve. I'd like to see one of those Custom Modeles profile Chipmunks. I thought I knew about everything they kitted back then and I've never seen one. I still have a couple of their kits hanging around, too.

Back when I was making our kits of Jim VanLoo's Chipmink, when Jim was finished building our kit prototypo, he also sent me a photo of a profile Chipmunk he did.

While it's not a complete replica it does look like similar to a chipmunk.

Here's the picture. I can find out more about if you are interested .

I am still in good graces with Jim, so I am sure if there were enough people interested I could ask and we could come out with a current kit that is more to the JVL Chipmunks original shape and size.

I spoke with J.VanLoo last week and he was thrilled with the idea of me doing it, so maybe you shouldn't do that Pat, since I have them already done, have already started rec'vg emails on it, and will be cutting a sample tonight.

I have already started on my version. It will be available for anyone wanting it. Feel free to go ahead and kit whatever you like. I think that David really wants one with the P-40 wing so I'll do that iteration, too. The P-40 wing is a great base for a starting out point.

Ok please let me set the record straight if I could before this gets too ugly. I asked private messaged both Pat and Walter on this subject. Pat to see if he would do plans, and Walter to let him know that even tho I would be interested in a kit in the future right now due to my employment status I could not justify the cost of a kit. Both these guys are trying to fulfill a need, I have time and balsa so plans work better. In the future I will go the kit route but not right now. Sorry to air the dirty laundry but I can't let good people hang here.

I gotta say something in my own behalf.
I draw plans because I love doing stunt planes. Have since the late 60's. Also I have drawn plans in the past for Walter's use, for very little pay, or for free, depending on the planes. The same goes for all the planes I've done for John Brodak, and even a few for RSM, not to mention Windy, Tom Dixon, Thomas Case, and others. I like these guys and don't mind spending a little time drawing up plans for their use. That said, I keep the right to use them for myself. I do have a laser and cut parts and even an occasional kit for my guys who like my work. I am not getting rich on this venture. In fact, a person could make a very successful attempt at starving doing this full time. I will keep drawing planes as long as the inspiration lasts, which at this rate could be another 50 or so years. My motto is: Fly stunt at 140!

Hey, I just think we are all really lucky to have you guys. I have been flying control line on and off for 35 years. I started when I was 10 and have build just about everything made (control line stunt) in the 70's and 80's. Even though I really liked my TF Noblers and Flite Streaks, Sterling Ringmasters, Midwest profile warbirds and Magician and later all the Sig offerings, including 3 Chipmunks you just cant beat what we have access to today. Super nice state of the laser cut kits and fantastic motors and all the other hardware and plans. In my lifetime it has never been easier or more fun to fly control line stunt. And the guys in this hobby are the best and always willing to lend a helping hand. My biggest problem is I want to build and fly them all. Thanks for your work guys.

Here it is! A PDF file of the profile Chipmunk. Should be cute plane. I shortened the nose an inch and it is still an inch longer than my P-40, so that should be good. The tail is close to the moment of the P-40 as measured from the CG to the elevator hinge line. The tail area is a bit smaller than the P-40 so the TVC will be a bit smaller, but still in a happy range. With light construction this will be a fun flyer.

Here is a Chipmunk with the Brodak P-40 wing, reshaped tips to be compatible with the Chipmunk shape, and an enlarged tail to match the modern performance available from the P-40 wing.

You need to use your considerable political clout to get John to have a bunch of wings built for this sort of project. Actually, P-40 wings in halves would be great so a person can join them for a straight wing or a flat wing. No tips and blank flap wood, too.
