Nats News
« on: July 11, 2010, 10:21:36 PM »
Entry seems to be up over last year, despite the absence of the F2B team and other name-brand guys.  Tomorrow is appearance judging and flight draws, so I'll know then for sure.  We get a printout of who flies when in qualifying rounds.

We have been forbidden to fly yesterday and today until RC Scale flying was done.  Even the grass circles were off limits.  It was pretty blustery this evening until 7 PM.  It looked like Darrell Harvin crashed his electric this evening. Gene Martine came within about an inch of the ground on a horizontal eight.  My first wingover pullout yesterday was frighteningly low. Air here is less dense than the 55-degree F, sea-level stuff at home and takes a while getting used to.

I looked at the weather prediction and found a quite pleasant forecast with highs in the 70s.  Then I noticed that was for Bellevue, WA.  Muncie weather for the week looks hot and stormy.

Speaking of the crash I was thinking of it and it reinforced my theory of having planes with interchangeable parts. If he was flying my plane then al it needed was to say hey Traian/Dorin I need a new outboard wing or a new fuse or stab whatever and presto you are back in business minus the paint finish but you have your plane.

So how did the control line scale guys get to fly?   With all the old timers coming back into the fold, I can see the entries coming back up.

Herd through the grapevine that Doug Moon also crashed on a low pull out. Sure hope it wasn't so or he has a backup.

Please tell us it wasn't so.  If he brought Riff Raff, that would have been a gorgeous airplane gone. :'(

Doug lost Ol' Blue. They said that the wings folded while he was practicing. The new Riff Raff is on the way, his dad is driving it up from Dallas. He should be back in the air tomorrow.

A lot of drama for being only Monday! It makes for great stories, I just hope it all ends well for everyone. Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Thanks for the updates.

Doc
As I posted in the Scale section, the wind all day Saturday and Sunday morning was not stunt weather it was better.  A stunt flier would have complained about hitting his own wake turbulence.  Sunday afternoon it got a little brisk but no one had problems.

Darrell is here to judge and was just flying for the heck of it.  He said that the airplane wasn't too important, but it looked nice to me.

Don't forget to keep us informed of the progress (or otherwise) of the Brit contingent, Paul Winter and his sidekick John Benzing. John might be hard to spot, but just listen and you'll soon find Paul.  ;)

Referring to Doc Holiday's question as to how we flew scale if the grass circles were off-limits, that's an excellent question!!  That was stupid.  Here we were on the scale circles due north of the r/c scale, the grass circles are west of us and well outside of the markers setting in the access road but were still deemed off-limits while we weren't.

I hate to hear that Bob. Maybe things will improve before next year. I am at work watching from the side lines. I would love to be there too but taking 3 weeks off work was out of the question.
