Title: primer over dope
Post by: Lester Nicholson on August 05, 2014, 06:56:47 AM
I have an airplane covered w/silkspan with four coats of clear sig dope [lite-coat]. It has set now for six weeks. Can I use Rustoleum auto primer on it?  Thanks for any advice.  I would like to use rustoleum paint if I can.   Nick

I have used Rustoleum grey  primer over old dope finishes.  The dope was years old and I have had no problems.  I have not tried over relatively fresh finishes, but I expect 6 weeks is probably log enough for the dope to finish gassing off.

I would do a small test spot somewhere that can be easily sanded away.  The primer will fish-eye or orange peel if there is a real problem.

Lester, You might consider using Nitrate clear next time. It gasses off much quicker.

I've used Robert's 540 primer over dope. The next day! Never had a problem with gas out, bubbles or lifting.

I doped yesterday and will prim today.  ;D

Keep in mind, I scratch everything before applying another coat.

I also do a masking tape, pull, test.
