Some here have met my father. He flew speed in the 40ty and got a second at the 1948 Canadian Nationals with a Ball engine 103 MPH. He fought in WW2 and was at all the major battles in the pacific. Iwo Jima, Si pan, Okinawa Midway, etc. On AO62 and is a plank holder. Can be seen at the Taluga Lounge presenting the Zero parts of a Kamakazi plane that hit his ship. (the only tanker not to sink hit by a Kamakazi during ww2) 96 years old

Enough of the intro. He had a stroke 6 years ago and has not done well. Can't see and can't hear and is having a hard time moving about. He told me the end is near. So the inevitable is close. Just say a prayer that this (last of America's Greatest generation) is at ease. That is all! Navy guys will get that.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Richard Storick. Storick joined the Navy after high school in June 1943 and trained at Great Lakes. His forst assignmnet took him aboard USS Taluga (AO-62). He shares several anecdotes from his time aboard, where he served as a rangefinder. Storick also shares his experiences ashore in Japan and Korea after the war. He was discharged in March 1946.

Hey Robert,
Thank you for opening your dad's life up to us. It reminds me of some of the guys I'd worked with , listened to & just knew. To me I believe most felt they were sent to do a job & if done properly they all would get home some day . None of them much enjoyed it I knew guys from the Air War, North Africa , Guadal Canal , South Pacific Navy, men that landed on Omaha beach,
The living conditions weren't good.
It's refreshing to see a man retain his dignity as his heath fails him a testament to the character of the man himself.

My future father-in-law is one of the few remaining heroes of WW II.
He was at Pearl Harbor in the quartermaster section and saw it all happen.
Said he never felt so helpless in his life.
He is being honored today at the NCOC in Florida.
He'll be 101 in April, still is sharp as ever, lives alone and just stopped driving.

He's my hero!

I found out about most of what my family did after they died or got very drunk. My father was a radio operator on a mine sweeper off of Omaha beach at Normandy. His oldest brother was a navigator on a B-24 and flew the Ploesi missions. The middle brother was a tank company commander under Patton and fought the Battle of the Bulge. They were all in their 20's and they all returned. They were the greatest generation (and damn lucky). I will pray for your father.

Like so many in his generation, they went to a war with some really unspeakable tragedies, fought it and won, and came home to welcoming nation. They deserve all the prayers and respect we can give them.

Many thanks to your father for his service, Robert. He may not hear our prayers out loud, but he will in his heart.
