Resuscitating the dead horse to beat it a few more times....
Could these be possible sources of silkspan?

I think both of these may be bulk suppliers, but we could probably get a single roll from them.
Or do we just go with the doctor's exam paper?

Brodak sells silkspan

They call it silkspan but it certainly is not close to the old silkspan we used to buy. I do not know what it is. I tried using it....once.

I my self like the doc paper. I put it on dry under the MonoKote or mylar film. Makes for very tough covering. D>K

Yeah, Brodak sells it for like $7 for 2 sheets. That's an absolute ripoff!
Doctor paper is a much better deal, but I've heard that tea bag filter paper is almost identical to the old silkspan. That's why I'm asking the question.

I have used this silkspan. I use it only over bare wood. It works fine for that purpose. Maybe it is good enough for open bays on smaller models.

Steve I wish someone would come up with a plentiful and reasonably priced source for silkspan and i guess the teabag paper is as close as you can get these days. The problem seems to be that if you do find it, you have to buy a truckload of it.

BMJR Models has Polyspan. I've had decent luck with medium doc paper. The light stuff works but you need a lot of courage to get it painted and it's quite brittle. As far as Brodak's Silk Span I've use it on 3 or 4 planes with good luck. The last was the easiest as I read and mostly followed John's instructions for the first time. I didn't soak the paper I only used a spray bottle to dampen it.

Doc paper is not silk span, far from it. The two have completely different properties and provide very different results. The unique fibrous plant composition of silk span gives it strength while doc tissue is from wood pulp lacking the same. Somewhere here I saw someone's magnifications of both supporting silk span. I experimented with both using butyrate over an open frame proving the point. Good luck on sourcing it, Polyspan is the answer.

If you have a small sample of what you would call good, real silk span, I would contact them and ask if you could have a sample of what you are interested in, and also maybe send them the sample if need be. That's what I did with Tidi and instead of a small sample sheet, they sent me a whole roll. They are in the business of selling the stuff, so just act like a potential customer! It can't hurt to keep looking for other possibilities.
