Portable take-off strip??
« on: July 01, 2025, 01:50:41 PM »
Now that I am back in the air I have been searching for a reasonable flying site here in Fletcher, NC. I had one I thought was great, but it is just short (that's the one I flew into the bush at). Next is an open field nearby but the grass is kinda deep even for 2 1/4" wheel. Last site is an old not used baseball area that is all grass, fenced in but open. This one is the best of the bunch but its grass is a bit deep for easy take-off/landing.

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a portable take-off strip for grass? I have looked at some carpet runners, but they seem to flimsy. I'm thinking it needs to be light enough to carry from the car and like 15 - 20 ft long? I really miss the soccer fields we had access to in FL.

i use a strip of carpet wit a nail/spike in the corners to keep it flat.  it only takes a few feet to get airb9rne.   My stooge helps hold the end down. D>K

John,
Do you whole the ship in the stooge until you hit full power? How long and wide is your strip?

I used 10mm Coroplast.  I bought a 4 x 8 sheet and cut into 4 2 x 4 and used long nails in each corner.  Laid end to end with a slight overlap.  Used it for years.

I like Mr. Chris' solution. His is lighter than mine. Mine is that rubber floor covering that has a diamond pattern on one side, and a fine square pattern that looks like it was imprinted by a screened surface. The mats are fairly heavy, so it takes a few minutes to set up the runway. Why did I use this material? Easy answer...free. When it dries out I will switch to coroplast specifically for the weight savings. Shoot, I might do it sooner. Coroplast is only $28/4x8 sheet here.

We use the Coroplast as well.  But we set the plane on a horse stall mat, a rubber mat.  Otherwise, the Coroplast is a bit slippery.  Horse stall mats can be heavy, however.  We leave all that at the field and move it into position when flying, move it off to the side when done.
