Title: Portable runway?
Post by: Kirk_Binns on August 04, 2008, 08:32:16 AM
I fly at a park where the city generally is in arrears with its lawn-mowing responsibility.  Any hints on a rollup runway that I could lay down in front of my plywood mounted stooge?  And fit into a mid-size sedan?

I use 4 pieces of 10mm Coroplast.  Each piece is cut into a bit of a wedge.  the doms are approx. 42 x 24.  The inner edge is about 1 inch shorter than the outer edge so when laid down it forms a bit of an arc.  I attached my stooge to the first piece and shingle the rest.

Check out the sporting goods section at WalMart. They have these nice black rubber matts that snap togather, the ones like they use to put weight stuff on in a gym.

Carpet remnants work well. Roll 'em up when you're done. When they get too grungy, pitch 'em and get more.

Old asphalt shingles work pretty well also. They are generally heavy enough to smash the grass down.

You might want to check with some places that use conveyors. We got a few old belts and they make great runways. The only thing is they will brown the grass after a hot day of flying.

These are about 3 ft wide.

They call them carpet Runners.  Not very expensive and they come in about three foot widths.  Check the Marts, Kmart, Walmart, etc.
