Hey all,
Just lately I've noticed a long delay when clicking on a message in the forums. Some times 30 seconds or more. I'm sure it must be on my end but I am stumped on what to try to fix the problem. There has been no changes to my system for quite some time.
Suggestions......? HB~>

Hey Tom,
Sorry I missed your call the other night.
It may not be your system. I too have had some delays on this site.
One thing to try is go to another web site and see if you notice the same delay.
If so you can go to http://speedtest.net/ and see what you IPS is giving you.
The only other thing I can think of that might slow you down is spyware.
Hope this helps.

Press Alt, Control and Delete simultainiously to open Task manager and see what all is running at the same time. Turn off all updaters.(highlight program, click on end task) Check that your Anti-virus program isn't running a scan at the moment. If none of this helps, kick your computer and cuss at it loudly. y1

That sounds like the old computer boot! HB~>
Seriously, your machine might need a disk cleanup and file defragment. Both can be found on the control panel. Also, both take some time to get done, so be prepared for a little standby time. I do the defrag automatically once a week, early in the AM so it's not any problem.

Paul,
Speed of link is fine. No problem with other sites. I have webroot spysweeper and swear by it. I scan my drives frequently. No virus detected either.
Scott,
Nothing funny with the tasks that are running. I'll take your other suggestion under advisement.
Don,
C: drive only about 25% full and I keep it defraged.
All,
I keep my registry clean and defraged also.
I remain at a loss as to what the problem might be. The computer was running fine when got out of the hospital and I am only having problems here.
I am running Win 2000 pro and keep it updated. still HB~>

Tom:
I am having the same problem and cannot find a reason for it on this end. I sent an email to Sparky about it but have not gotten a response as yet.

This forum in particular, loads all the pictures in a thread when you open the first message if viewed in linear mode. For example, open Brad's TRex thread, it will take quite a while, where as a thread with no pic's comes right up. I don't think there is anything wrong with your 'puter Tom. Just life on the net.
One thing you can do, is set your personal profile settings on here to not show users Avatars and Sig's. That should speed things up a tad.

In the local paper this morning (Wichita Eagle) there was a short blurp on that problem. It said that with so many computers newly added on the system (christmas time) that MANY servers are finding themselvs overloaded and that it is causing a lot of them to be slow in loading and other things. That might be your problem. Try it during a low load time. Say midnight or mid morning etc.

It does not appear that photos have any bearing on which thread load slowly. Some of the slow threads have no photos. This particular thread just took 88 seconds to load. This problem showed up for me about two weeks before Christmas so I don't think the timing has anything to do with it. I have tried it on three different computers with the same results on each one. I am certainily not a computer guru, but I really believe the problem is not on this end.

Bill,
Are you using a good Firewall program?
Another source of slow loading, is data mining, and spam forwarding via unused ports on your computer. That can be eliminated by using a good firewall like Zone Alarm that blocks all those ports, and can notify you of any probing attempts.
This forum is slow loading to begin with, so unauthorized use might be more noticeable here.

Bill:
Yes, I have a very good firewall that does notify me of any probing attempts. I am going to phone the computer tech at my former office (now retired and loving it) and see if he can shed any light on the problem. Might not do any good, but it is worth a shot.
Edit to add this. I just noticed that the weather info is not showing up (getting the red X) and if you click on the weather box to get the forecast you get the following message, "Oops! We can't find the webpage you're looking for". Don't know if this is related to the slow loading or not.

I assume you are using IE. Why not try Firefox? At least it might shed some light on the problem.
I'm using a Mac and don't see any problem with Safari, my browser.
-
Bill,
My weather box no longer works either. Must be a forum software change.
One other thing you might try, is going into your forum profile and turning off everything that displays (signatures, avatars, etc), and all the notifications. Then leave and reenter the forum to see if there is a noticeable change.
