I can think of a few designs that have never won an Open NATS Competition, but with all the designs that have been published or kitted how many would have won if in the hands of someone other than the designer? This Phantom II RSM is coming out with is one. The companion plane, the Crusader is another. Jack Sheeks has had numerous designs as well as Larry Scarinzi. I could list a whole lot of people, but, I let the people speak. H^^

Gene Schaeffer's USAAMA (Stunt Machine, too). That's my pick for a great plane that never won the NATS.
Don't think having someone else flying the model would make a great difference.

I assume you mean "great" planes that never won the Nats. Because there are a ton of planes out there (including everything I ever built) that not only have never won the Nats, but never flown in the Nats.
