PS: I just spent 20 minutes on MapQuest, finding a route I'd like to take to Baton Rouge. Will work on the return trip tomorrow. Cajun burgers sound really wunnerful. I'm a bit skeered of Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager, tho.

I like my yellow canopy, but I think Randy might be voting for the RMD.

Hey Doug the pleasure was all mine. You were a little busy to do much talking since you were working your butt off. I enjoyed the heck out of being there.. What a great bunch of guys...and David and Allan. I like yellow too....I could just save money on paint and paint all my planes yellow. We did have some really nice paint jobs there...

"Ringmaster of Mass Destruction"? LL~ Well, Randy just wasn't very specific. I like both your planes, Allan. The yellow canopy is certainly "in your face" unique...not a bad thing.

How about a report on the laminated ply LG? Preferably after a couple of botched landings? John Miller had some problems with his first try, and I'm not sure if he did a "re-do" or changed to CF or 'luminum. H^^ Steve

There are some hi-res pictures of my RMD-3 on the Ringmaster Brotherhood site (Album section) right now, but they show the 1st revision gear which was laminated purplehart veneers. It was springy (not enought layers) and not the right size. I wanted it both wider and taller than original. I have made 3 different forms and 4 sets of gear legs before I finally got it right. The final successful version (what they saw in Baton Rouge) is 5 layers of maple veneer (.020") and just epoxy, doped with the same yellow tint as the rest of plane. Weight was something like 32 grams for the set if I remember right. Will take some close up pics of gear and post here and also on Ringmaster Brotherhood site. The pics on the Brotherhood site will show more detail because you can post full resolution there, but only in Album section. I think using veneers is better than plywood. With plywood, some of the layers are with the grain and some are cross grain. You dont get as much stength from the cross grain layers. Using solid wood veneers, all the grain is aligned in the direction where you need the strength.

Last 2 pics are the clamping form. Made from 2 layers of .75" MDF, about 8" x 12" each.
Cut profile of gear on bandsaw (you need to allow for a little spring back when it comes out of form).
2 each .75" x 1.5" maple boards on top & bottom extend past the sides for the 3/8" all thread & wing nuts for clamping.
5 layers of maple verneer .020" each, brush on 30-min. epoxy, clamp in form overnite.
I wax the form and wrap lamination in wax paper to prevent sticking.
Veneers are thin enough that no steam or wetting is needed.
Cut taper of the gear leg on bandsaw after it comes out of form.
5 layers gave about the right spring and strength for a 48oz plane.
If it was 60 oz plane I would add another layer and / or use a layer of glass on each side.
Will put full res pictures on Brotherhood of the Ring site in my album titled "perretar", including a couple more of the items Ty mentioned.
