Plane storage?

I have many airplanes to get off the floor. I need to know what is the standard spacing on a rack of hangars. 10-12-13 inch

High enough to clear your rudder and landing gear.

Your, welcome! Jerry

If hanging by leadouts, one type of rack is a pipe.  You sling the leadouts over the pipe by attaching the two ends of a piece of cable to the two leadouts.  Then you slide the plane until it hits another plane.  Slowly.

Another rack is a 2x4 or 1x3 hung horizontal.  In that case, cup hooks for fixed locations are good. That is my rack.  I drill a bunch of holes, then screw in the cup hooks where I want them.  Trial and error.

Height is another issue.  In my case, I like the wingtip just an inch off the ground.

My answer was to utilize a previously unused high attic.

It took a year to move from inaccessible to useful.

PVC pipe with bent coat hanger wire is the my solution.

The pipe is bent for two reasons:

1. PVC bends.

2. Roof joints were not installed a precision craftsman, just a framer.

My rack is adjustable but most are spaced at 10”.

I've run outa wall space in my small mancave , so I've taken to hanging them upside down from the garage ceiling like bats! That way the dust settles on the underside and the topside stays much cleaner.

No pictures, but I have previously made “C”s out of larger PVC and attached them to joists in the ceiling.  This allowed me to store planes across the ceiling and not just on the walls.  Every bit helps.

Fly more often and eventually your fleet will thin out, mine did!

Can you bludge a shipping container ? ,
Or TWO - putem 20 foot apart , parrallel .
Put a wire rope or beam F & R ,
Throw over a truckers tarp  & down at the rear ( fence ) .
Put in a brick barbeque ,Crosss Flows best .
 a few chairs & a table . Incude a fridge .

A shade tree or two , and your home .  :)

p.s. you throw in a door or two and a few windows . Bit like this , but wider between and roof slopes aft .

Id use twice as many blocks , so it dont get saggy .

Of course , youll have to do some gardening .  S?P Demo windows & things are sometimes free , in the more affluent areas .

Just a thought .

For reasons I cant remember I made my progressive. Top was 11" bottom went open to 15". At the time buying the 4 way fitting was the cheapest root and used less pipe. Fittings and pipe have gotten quite expensive. Mine made of 1" sch. 40 pipe. As an add, I like to support mine close as possible to the fuselage.  It probably would never happen but I feel like if supported mid span it would induce a warp/ dihedral.  I know thats being a bit silly but....

Take a look at the ACFC page on facebook. Bruce Perry has an incredible number of very cool planes stored on his rack system based on retail clothing wall system hardware. Probably not cheap enough for me. I hang 'em from the joists via the leadouts on J hooks from the hardware store.  y1 Steve
