Plane protectors - Silver coverings.
« on: December 12, 2012, 09:26:12 PM »
Im either have a mental block ( which after the last 3 months is possible ) or Im not looking hard enough.

A few years back I saw a few planes which were being covered with a silver stretch fabric which protected it from the sun - whilst not in use.

I thought these were readily avaliable but alas I cannot locate one - or even what to search for !!

Any clues ? I need to get one...

It the smallest they do is for 68" wingspan.

I know there were ones out there for our sized ships.

Bob Gieske's daughter (Christy, very nice lady!) used to make custom silver covers, but they weren't stretchy.

PJ, If what you are thinking of is the silver reflective skin over a thin foam inner layer, we use them in soaring and they are available from builders like SAMBA Models in the CZ Republic. Possibly Kennedy Composites in California may be able to help too.  While both normally sell pre-made sets for the sailplanes that they sell, they may be willing to tell you where the raw material is available.

I use aluminized (aluminiumised to you) mylar : http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&field-keywords=mylar%20blanket&index=blended&link_code=qs&sourceid=Mozilla-search&tag=mozilla-20 .  These keep the sun from heating the paint while transporting the dog in the car.  They aren't much use on the field, where they would blow away.

Why not cut up one of those windshield protectore made of aluminized bubble wrap and seal it with duct tape.  The protectors go for $8 for the 23" and $10 for the 27"s.  OOPS, not exotic enough?  LL~

Larry,

The material, of which you speak, is available in rolls. Can be found at just about any upholstery shop that specializes in aircraft interiors.

Figure out what you need and buy that amount right of the roll. Or have the upholstery guy sew up something custom.

Doug.. yeah kind of..

I always thought they were a little more cut to the shape of the plane....

A young man in our club used to cover his plane with an old blanket when it was out in the sun.   Removed blanket long enough to fly.  Then used same blanket for putting plane back in the car.   One of his competitors got so psyched out he couldn't do a decent pattern worrying about what was under the blanket.

I think the material came from a bridal shop or a place that caters to that trade. I have one of Christies covers that I don't use anymore. If you have no luck finding the material, I can send you mine, it just may cost a bit for postage as she has sewed weights into it to hold it down.
