Bob, I use a 50/50 mix of "Formula 409" and water. Sometimes I put in a tablespoon or two of methanol in the solution as well. ZZ

Often I’ve used Windex type glass cleaner, but these days I use the foaming Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner. Works very well

Bob, I'll give you the best tip I can and it originally came to me from Eddy R. That is to wipe the plane dry of oil as best you can with soft blue shop paper towels BEFORE you spray any cleaner on the plane, otherwise you just push the oil around and it takes twice as much time and work to get it clean. Once you have the plane wiped down, use the cleaner of your choice. I've used everything from windex to concoctions of windex and fantastic, 409, mr clean, etc, and most worked fine for me, but keep in mind I use Klasskote and urethane clear which is mostly impervious to anything.

Did the price of Sprayway go up? The link you have is for a 6-pack for $35.39. That's almost $6 per can. Just before the NATs I picked up a 2-pack of 19oz. cans for $3.80 at my local Walmart.

I don't think that was me, although ammonia might not get along with bare color dope (although fuel is far worse!). I use it because that's what Phil Granderson told me to use, and he's the coolest guy I know.

Windshield washer fluid. Get winter blend it has more alcohol in the mixture.

Spike it with a little extra dish soap and alcohol if you have some. A gallon never fits when I refill the truck and I dump the remainder in a squirt bottle.

That's basically what I do in old spray bottles with finger sprayer. Mostly windshield washer fluid, a dab of dish soap and a small amount of ammonia. I do one gal of strong solution for planes and a gal of weak solution for my hands. First learned this way back on ISKY's forum and been using it ever since. I fly all castor at 25%-29% and it cleans up well. It hasn't damaged any brand dope or covering.

I was taught to wipe off as much oil as you can with paper towels. Then when you get home use alcohol and old rags, Like T-shirts and flannell shirts that you don't wear any more

I just unhook the lines, throw it in the car and hang it on the wall when I get home. Sometimes there will be a dead bug on the LE.

Ok, on my IC's that I flew now and then, I use shop rags, the red kind, to sop up the slime at the field then Windex and a thin dishtowel before going back on the wall.

I like "Scrubbing Bubbles", mostly because the spraycan is not going to leak, spill, or make a mess. But it also does a fine job.

The type of paper towel makes a huge difference.
Cheap towels just push the oil around....don't soak up the oil and cleaner.
I use VIVA towels to first soak up the oil, then spray with cleaner (I use Windex) and wipe down with VIVA towels again.
Works great with minimum effort.

I use Sprayway for windows. Works great. For airplanes, some Dawn liquid in warm water works as good as the high-priced stuff.

Hello Before leaving the flying field I (in fact the whole family cleans the models) usually wipe off as much oil as we can with paper towels, tissues or serviettes that I have in the field boxes. When home I use warm water and dish-washing detergent and an old soft singlet or tea shirt to clean remaining oil left off. This works just as well as window cleaner and if the model is epoxy or urethane coated or a polished finish it cleaners up much better.
Stack or tongue mufflers make so much more mess and a pipe or well designed muffler make for easier cleanups.

The industrial towels yank outta da box at Lowes/Home Depot work pretty good too.

I make up my own mixture : To a gallon of water add 1 ounce of blue dawn. this becomes 1/2 of the plane wash mix. the other is Super Clean in purple can/ bottle cut to a consistency of 3 parts water to 1 part super clean. Mix the tow in a separate jug and pour into your favorite spray bottle. I prefer the one which fits in my big flight box which always stays in my car! I use Viva paper towels to wipe and to wash of the planes after every session. The towels used to wash the plane as opposed to wiping off the oil, can be used again to either wash or wipe as the case may be. Paper towels are good for more than one use!

Sorry for not spending the time to post a link with the cheapest price. I spent the effort to find *a* reference, I wasn't going to spend a lot of time doing comparison shopping for everyone. Next time, I won't post a link, you guys can all go figure it out for yourselves.

I have one spray bottle of SIG magic model cleaner remaining. It works great but is hard to find. Label says ingredients are isopropyl alcohol and ammonia. Dies anyone know proportions of these? I have also read that the mixture releases chloroform. Anyone know for sure?

Before you get frustrated trying to find "Sprayaway", you might have better luck by spelling it correctly. It is "SPRAYWAY".

For cleaning castor off the best thing I have found is PB PLASTER. Leaves a nice shine and removes the gunk fast. The smell is not all that great. Worked great though for Fox and McCoy all castor fuel.

When I started flying ignition almost exclusively and using Walmart Super Tech two stroke oil, I just us a paper towel or an old cloth. Wipes of clean.

I think it matters what the concentration is and how long you leave it on. The mixture I make has maybe 10% ammonia added to windshield washer fluid and it doesn't do anything to al spinners or engines. I spray it on and wipe it off.

I just use steel wool and acetone. I think that Brett recommended that one time. I think he can recommend a website for it, but gets upset if you start asking him stuff like "can't I get acetone cheaper at Walmart?" Steel wool is getting harder and harder to find since they came out with scotchbrite pads. I don't recommend those as they might scratch the paint.
