Pitch gauge for pusher and puller props
« on: December 17, 2020, 11:52:12 PM »
Did some searching and Im trying to find a prop gauge that you could use for both pusher and puller props. Have a possible line on a prather gauge. Is there a way to use it for both?

Thank you in advance

James

I have a Prather pitch gauge but don't have any pusher props.
I think that you could just flip the pusher prop over so the front of the hub is facing down instead of up.

Jim Lee carries a pitch gauge that can do both that is made by Bob McDonald. Check out his slot in the Vendors Section and I think he has pics of it on his web site. Pretty reasonably priced if I remember correctly.

Igor Burger has an electronic pitch gauge that will do both.

Lee Machine Shop has the SST pitch gage in stock and ready to ship.  Check the vendors corner.
Will do right and left hand props.
Thanks
Jim

I don't think so, it will be at the same nominal angle as upright, and you will be trying to measure the curved side if the airfoil. What you need is a scale that is on the other side. You could just copy the Prather scale and make a mirror image, and relocate the arm to the corresponding pivot. But sounds like Jim has a better solution.

I think I just reversed the Prather scale plate, maybe it was necessary to drill & tap one hole in the baseplate.
I did not bother to make a scale to the other side, it's somehow possible to see the pitch from other side, using a ruler. L

Reworking the Prather unit will require some VERY accurate drilling and hole placement so that all the geometry comes out correct, so it will read correctly. Might not be within the realm of most peoples skill levels and tool capabilities. Paying some one to have it done would put you in the area of what one of the SST units costs, so it's more or less a wash. Just buy a new one if you don't have one already, then that makes it more worth the investment.
  Type at you later,

Oh, it's not that critical or precise even the right way around.  But, no reason to, Jim already did it!

Do not for any reason rely on information pertaining to props on Howard.  He and I searched for some props at his shop one evening prior to heading for Golden State the next morning.  We tore the shop apart looking with Howard thinking he may have left them at tbe Team Trials.  After several hours we finally found them in the cabinet marked Props.

Alan is just sore about my keeping one of his good props.  Now they’ve closed the border and he can’t get it back.
