Title: Pilot's pad !!!
Post by: Paul Taylor on April 14, 2012, 12:40:23 PM
At our club meeting last month, I volunteered to head up the project to get a pad poured in the center of our circle.
I had been to the WKSI contest a few times and Charlie and Allen have some nice pads on there circles. I called Charlie and he filled me in on what to get at Lowes. (Thanks Charlie!)

Jim Lynch and I loaded up this morning with supplies and tools. And after our meeting today we had lots of help.

Hope to get it poured this week. #^

You forgot to dig!   ??? Surely you don't want a step at the edge of the center circle.  n~

What were the list of materials and did you put any rebar in the pad, or just concrete. How many bags of concrete did you use?

the pad here at the Wichita circles has grooves cut into the pad at 12, 3, 6 and 9 O'clock. We also have a center that I think can support a speed pylon but not sure about that.

We are on a land fill and can not dig. We are going to put dirt up around the edge like a picture's mound. And over time it will settle in.

I got a 16ft x 8in board of siding, had the guy at Lowe's cut it in half the rip it down the middle. We had about 2 ft left over. Cost was less then 10 bucks for the board. 6 bucks for the stakes. No rebarr. It is going to take less then 1 yrd of concrete. I will try and get over to the Ready Mix place sometime this coming week to pick up one of the small U-Pull buckets. Cost is less then 100 bucks.

Thought so, just bein' a little sarcastic.  :-X

We at the Tulsa Glue Dobbers had a similar project about 3 years ago and poured a 1/8 circle runway. Gravel bed with rebar. No cracks yet!

Any kind if welded wire you have lying around will help prevent large cracks from forming.  I have even used surplus cattle panels.  You really need the wire mesh.

5mm welded mesh - 5mm thick steel @150mm centers each way

any reo is better than none - the chicken mesh will work if thats all you have

Making a round pad sure seems like a lot of extra work with the forms.  We have ordinary square pads at our field, and they work just fine.

Much better than nothing.   When you pour, make sure the mesh is propped up so it is near the center from top to bottom.  I use pieces of brick, but clean rocks will work to hold it up.   Mesh does no good when mashed down to the bottom of the pour.
