Title: Pictures of our new circle
Post by: James Mills on January 10, 2008, 03:42:37 PM
I'm going to try and post some pictures of our new circle here in Springfield, MO.  We lost our last site to a dog park, due to be up and running by summer.  I was told it was finished last fall, I guess they lost our phone number but it looks very nice.

James...

Couple years ago..I met a fella on EBay... was selling  original Veco Smoothie and Chief Kits... We emailed a few times... he was from Springfield Mo.. (and I from KC...) I asked him why he was sellling them.. he stated there was no place to fly and he had no one to fly with.... Looks like he should have held onto the kits.. Nice Circle..I may have to come down sometime and try it out with you..

That the city would provide a flying site and even have a paved circle is probably uncommon these days. I wonder how many city owned  control-line flying sites are currently being used these days. I know Tucson, Wichita, Dallas, and Texarkana all have one or more circles. Is there still one in Topeka?

Nice circle and it is constructed the same as the one in McMinnville Or. Good flying and looks like nice open area. Means clean air. Keep the wind at your back/ Leo Mehl HB~>

Come on down, the more the merrier.  We are blessed for sure, when we first started using the old site the guy in charge of the parks department despised model aircraft period, wanted nothing to do with it.  I spoke with him several times and he was at times a complete jerk about it (and there were other board members who supported us).  We couldn't get any improvements, took a couple of years just to get a picinic bench on site and it was one that was on its way to the land fill.  He even told the local news paper and TV stations the park wasn't in use when asked how the modelers felt about the dog park.  Fortunatly he retired and the new guard is very supportive and not just interested in more soccer and softball fields that won't be used most of the time (and I'm not anti sports, I'm a former coach).  Anyway, didn't mean for this to get long winded but there is still hope when lines of communication can stay open.

I find it interesting that Oregon has, what, at least 4 dedicated and paved CL facilities (could be more - Portland, Salem, Eugene and Beaverton). In Washington, our club, the Northwest Skyraiders, has been working on getting a field for, well, for about as long as I can remember. At least since we lost the Boeing Space Center west parking lot. And all we get from the zolvochy politicians is promises without action. Even when we fly at site that we have had at least nominal approval to fly at, all it takes is one grandma that lives 5 miles away to complain and that's it, we're kicked out.

There is currently a proposal for yet another site, but it's at least 2 hours from my house. Sigh... Thought I had a chance for a circle at a local RC field, but that looks like it's not going to happen either.

That is good news. Our flying group is a 100 miles or less from Springfield. I am sure we will come over there sometime next summer. I am sure there is no hard surface circle that is any closer.

James,  where in Springfield is the field located?  Also do you know or fly with gary & Milo Wallace.  They of course do not fly stunt as they are envolved in F2C racing.   Used to go to contests at the field that was next to the Mall( I think Battenfield or Battlefield) can't remember with the CRS.  Maybe I can get with Chris and we can come down.  DOC Holliday

PS:Our circle in KC is at the Northern Knights RC field.  1 mile east of 435 on NE 96th St.  You will pas a big park on the way to the entrance to the RC field.  John Bender and Howard Terrell have been maintaining the circle. jeh

If you're coming from K.C. take HWY 13 South, it turns into Kansas Expressway once you come into Springfield.  Stay on that until you come to Bennett (probably at least 10 blocks).  Turn left (West) on Bennett, after you cross Scenic it will be on your left (South side of Scenic) next to Isabella's House (a crisis center, but I don't know that they'll be able to help if we have a crash;D).

I haven't seen Gary Wallace in years, last dealings I had with him were very negative.

You're more than welcome to come on down.  We may try and schedule a stunt clinic/fun fly later this year.

Do a Google map search, do a satellite view for 2750 W. Bennett, Springfield MO and you'll see the area.

Elwyn:

In case you are running a survey, we have a dedicated city park for CL only here in Alameda Ca. One paved 70' circle and one 45' circle. Maintained by the city, with reasonably clean outhouse (I knew you were wondering), electricity for the coffee maker. Locked and accessible only to people with the city permit and their guests. Anyone can get the permit regardless where they reside. Of course AMA membership is required and must be proven. We have been flying CL at this site for about 30 years, maybe more. Alameda is one town west of Oakland; we can see the stadium of the worst team in pro football rising in the distance across the estuary.

Randy, actually, the site in Redmond, OR, is still there, and still maintained. Nils figured nobody would maintain it, but he found out it's actually in fine shape. So, that makes five official CL sites in Oregon, to one (if you consider Carkeek Park an acceptable CL site). The promised site at Flaming Geyser Park got shot down this last week, so it's not only 2 hrs away from you anymore. Sorry for the bad news as usual... HB~> Steve

Steve,

Yea, I forgot about Redmond. But it isn't paved. And Carkeek park, as you know, isn't really usable. My point was more that I just find it interesting that Oregon doesn't seem to have any problems. I suppose it's just the attitude of people here. It's not as if the Oregon guys go to any more efforts than we do. It's just a friendlier climate. Oregon doesn't see model airplanes as some sort of enemy to be stamped out. I feel like that's the attitude around here.

Hi Randy,

Did you mean McMinnville, rather than Beaverton?

We live in west Beaverton, and it's a twenty mile drive to Delta Park for me. That can be an hour or more during rush hour!

A couple more city or county run CL fields are Sepulveda Basin and Whittier Narrows in SoCal, Buder Park south of St. Louis, Mo and Flushing Meadow in New York City. They all seem to be adequately maintained and operating normally.

Glad you have a new paved circle, James. looks nice.

Bill,

Man, how could I have left out McMinnville? That is a really great site.

No, Scott Reise told me that a new paved circle had gone it at Beaverton along with with some grass circles. Told me about it last Spring. Said it would be ready for flying toward the end of last summer. You might want to contact Scott. I haven't actually seen it, but Scott says it's pretty nice.

Randy,

The new field is to be located in Hillsboro rather than Beaverton, but so far it is not finished, and perhaps not even started.

I've been driving by there when in the vicinity (near Hillsboro stadium on Hwy 26 west), but have seen nothing even resembling a flying circle to date.

Last time I talked to Scott, he said a grass circle was finished, but promptly used as a parking lot for heavy equipment! You can imagine the damage that would do, after all the recent rain.

I'm going by there later this week, and will report back.

Bill

       James,

Very happy to see you have such a nice circle. Those luxurious items are hard to come by! Happy flying.

Ted,

Thanks, you're going to have to come down and fly with us some time (we can even hit Bass Pro, about 2 miles away, I'm going to need a new rifle soon :)).
