Title: Picture test of unusual model @ Brodaks
Post by: Joe F Just on July 12, 2009, 09:31:29 AM
This is just one of the unusual models I saw while attending the Brodak contest. This thread is to see if my new photo set up will work.

That is different, but I like it. And your photos work just fine, as far as I can tell.

I bet that Super Clown hauled major butt with that on it!

That particular airplane is owned by Bob Z. I was quite impressed with the power that plane had with that engine. Surprisingly, the plane was quite maneuverable. I believe Bob stated it was a bit nose heavy but it surely didn't stop him from doing the maneuvers. I launched the plane for him and it was amazing how that engine was pulling. It had a very neat sound to it. I'm the owner of a Super Clown myself and I can say mine sure doesn't fly like his. I liked the way he engineered the mount for the engine. Ken

I had on of those Wankels years ago.  I built the Sterling Stearman for it.  It was easy to hand start if you remembered it liked to start wet.  Was very easy to set and adjust.  The plane would fly and look real at less than half throttle.  Full throttle was like flying an early rat racer.  Used to do touch and goes as well as taxi.  I still kick myself for letting someone talk me out of it.  Having fun,  DOC Holliday

I was both surprised and pleased with the performance of the Wankel engines. We are evaluating them for possible application to a CL scale twin.

I have two, the original version from quite a few years back and also the present one.

The new version weighs around three ounces more and is of a different intake configuration, known as charge cooling. I researched this principle years ago for application on full-sized aircraft, finding a slight weight gain with no discernable improvement in performance.
The OS Wankels showed similar behavior. I tached them both with a 9 1/2-6 Master Airscrew plastic prop. The older version showed around 13,800 RPM, the newer one just a tad more.

As Ken pointed out, the plane effortlessly and with a bit more tailweight, it would have been better yet regarding maneuverability.

A huge issue as most of you know is vibration - there isn't any. As mentioned, the sound is unique but when holding the running plane, it feels like electric power.

I plan to try it in a larger stunt ship to see how it fares. Also how it turns a larger prop.

I'll post more as time permits.

Bob Z.
