Title: Picture of Classic Winner Joe Gilbert with Ringmaster
Post by: Randy Cuberly on March 19, 2018, 06:24:39 PM
Here is a picture of Mr. Ringmaster Joe Gilbert holding his winning Ringmaster!

He posted one flight score of 600 for his last flight in very bad wind.  I personally would not have believed this could be done with a Ringmaster had I not witnessed it myself!  In that wind it resembled a Combat plane flying a perfect Stunt Pattern!

The flight was truly remarkable and completely UNBELIEVABLE for this old Man!  Joe, my friend, you are truly One of a Kind and a great guy to boot!  Keep on Keep'n on and I know you will do very well at the World's this year!

In some Circles, Joe is known as "Grand Master, Lord of the Ring". But, unless you know the "Secret Handshake", you may not know about that....

Dale g,.....lowly Master of the Ring

I believe that the engine is a Brodak .25.

Buy the way, Joe won 1st in  Old Time Stunt Glow,  2nd in the Ringmaster event, and 1st in Classic.

Has anyone ever won OTS glow and classic before?

Congratulations Joe. You are one of the most talented flyers I have ever known. As my son says, you have the knack. Well done my friend.

The Ringmaster event has only been around for a couple of years or so but I doubt it!

A couple of folks have won both Classic and Old Time.  I know Bob Whitely has done in the past (maybe a couple of times).

I don't think anyone has ever done it using a Ringmaster in both events and probably never will again unless it's the same Mr. Ringmaster!

Uhhhhh....Well yes He's good but that Ringmaster is a bit different!

Uhhhh... I also have it on good authority that He intends to use a "Blue Max" for the Worlds!  Kaz Minato's absolutely Great design, with possibly a Stalker Engine!!

Theres Ringmasters & Ringmasters . Think the thing at the team trials was a flapped one I think  , maybe comparable to this ?

Now if he puts a ringmaster canopy & Eliptical Tailpane on the Blue Max , It could go down in History. n1

Similar to that one but it's called the Ringmaster 576, done by Pat Johnston.

I think the Blue Max will be the latest version by Kaz Minato.  Great Airplane!

Joe Gilbert is an outstanding stunt flyer and a dear friend for sure but he is not the Original Mr Ringmaster! That title belongs to Roy Philip from South or North Carolina who in the late 1990's or early 2000's won most if not all Stunt events at the Cleveland, Ohio Stunt Contest flying a genuine S-1 Ringmaster powered by a Fox .35! Roy in now well into his 80's and flies UC and RC but not in competition any more however he was a formidable competitor, Just like Joe Gilbert is today, back in earlier times. Not taking anything away from either individual just thought you all should know!

I remember the first time I seen Joe fly at the second Tulsa field after losing their first one.  He was flying an ARF Nobler and doing well with it.  After the flying I seen him with Jim Lee cornered and talking about the ARF Nobler.  Also he is one of those guys that if nobody is on the circle he is flying, some times flying other peoples planes.  I think he took one of Don Hutchenson's planes and won with it with out appearance points, if I remember right.  Also you very seldom if ever see him with out his number one pit helper, his wife.   How many remember I think was his first VSC in which he flew in wind that was keeping guys grounded just so he could make top 20 or was it top ten. I have seen team-Gilbert progress every year since I first met him..........about 10 years ago. He is definitely on his way to being one of the all-time-greats in our sport.  He is also an all-time-great person, just in case you have not met him and his very, very special wife, Colleen.

The Ringmaster 576 (sq inches) was designed by Pat Johnston and Dee Rice about 10 years ago........Pat did the beautiful CAD drawings.   I am still flying the original prototype. Everyone that has ever flown it fell in love with it. The first 25 kits of the 576 were done by Mike Gibson on his computer controlled water jet cutter, that he uses in his factory. The results are about the same as a laser, but no burning. The 576 is an exact upscale of the S-1, except for two things. The tail moment is one inch longer and the airfoil was changed to a thicker and very powerful one. Well, I guess you can say three things, as we added flaps, though by conventional standards, the flaps are rather small. Of interest, the un-flapped version flies so close to the flapped one, that I think only an accomplished expert level flier would notice a difference, therefore Pat offers either version in laser cut kits or plans. The 576 is perfect for .46 sized engines. Pat drew up CAD plans for a 526 version, which is perfect for .40 size engines. My original weighed 38 ounces, with an LA .40, but now with an LA .46 and larger tank, it is just under 40 ounces. The 576 article was published in Control Line World magazine about 9 years ago. If you have any interest, here are the links to the article with photos.  It is in two parts.    http://www.brotherhoodofthering.info/mbbs22/forums/get-attachment.asp?attachmentid=228   and   http://www.brotherhoodofthering.info/mbbs22/forums/get-attachment.asp?attachmentid=229    Just copy and paste in your https:// window. It should open right away.

Did that score include the 10point OMG bonus?

I would assume that it did!  However I would also assume that most of his competitors in Classic more than made up for that difference with their appearance points.  His Ringmaster while nicely finished was not a "showboat" like very many of the Classic planes.

I finished 11th out of 36 fliers and his score was 40 points higher than mine and I received 16 points for appearance.

There are typically several airplanes there in the 18 to 20 point range and this year was no exception.  There was at least 1, 20 pointer!

Hi Gordon,

That is indeed Randy Powell's "Ringmaster Deluxe" built several years ago.  It is a beautiful bird and although I've never seen it fly I believe, and have been told, it flies quite well.  It is significantly different from the Ringmaster 576 in a number of important ways, and I believe somewhat larger!

Randy P. is of course a Master builder and finisher.

This is a good representation of the S-1 and 576. It is a Ringmaster in appearance, but has the numbers of a stunt ship. A great Pat Johnston design.
