I noticed that some of the thumbnailed photos just open to about two or three times the size of the thumbnail. Others open to much larger size, and open in a whole new screen, with the - and x, etc. It appears to be due to the size of the file, either in kb, or in pixels, but I don't know which. Anybody know? For examples (not to pick on either) is Rootbeard's thread "Fun day flying with food and friends", and "Huntersville Photos" by Sam Laughery.
Also, what kind of software is req'd to make thumbnails of photos? It might be useful to put pics on my club's website. http://www.nwskyraiders.com/index.html (http://www.nwskyraiders.com/index.html) y1 Steve

Hey Steve,
I think it has to do with the size of the file. I do not know where the cut off is, but on some of my photos I do not crop them down much because it would make the subject too small. Others I can cut the size way down and not lose the subject. Also I use one of the low end cameras, and that makes a difference on the size and pixels I would assume.
(and stop picking on me... LL~)

Hi Steve,
Not sure what the size limit is but I use some free software called IRFANVIEW that someone on this site recommended. You can reduce the size of the file and crop very easily. I probably reduced these more than necessary. I haven't quite got the right size yet. Anyone have a size that seems to work best?

I always shoot for about 850-875 width. The Irfanview is a great download.

I almost always use the 640 x 480 option on Irfanview. This is how big they come out. If you make them bigger, then they will have to be fuzzier. The grass in this shot is the killer...I should have cropped it down. It's around 50kb, maybe 51. I'm pretty sure the limit on Stunthanger is 1000kb, tho. I like to try to keep 'em small, tho.
This pic was taken at the appearance judging at the motel at VSC 19...an amazing experience. Wish I could have voted for a bunch of the models, but this Pow Wow knocked my socks off. A buddy of Dave Shirley's, but I don't know the name. Very tastefully done. y1 Steve

I'm still buttin' heads with an older version of microsoft Picture It. Click the link below and either laugh or shake your head in disgust at a picture I posted in another thread a while back.

You all might want to look at this link to resize. It's the easiest one I have found yet. It's FREE and it's no trouble to make pictures bigger or so small you can't even see them.

Just one more avenue for you.

Yep... 640 X 480 is plenty large enough to show just about anything except a large landscape like a flying field. No reason any model photos need be larger.
Often thought about writing a dedicated applet to make cropping, resizing and compression almost automatic, at least very simple. However there are so many free programs already out that can do it and my project list is so long I will probably never get to it. In the mean time Infranview would be a good choice.
Whatever you use take the time to learn how to use it, read the instructions and help files, play till you can get your photos in the 50 to 60 K reagon and have fun posting photos..

It's pretty easy to go to www.photobucket.com and create a free account. Then you can upload your images without using the various forum software. It gives quite a bit more flexability in that there is no size limitation, and you can upload as many files at once as you like. Also when uploading files photobucket will give you the option to resize for forum posting. If I remember correctly it defaults to 640x480. When the image is uploaded to your account it gives you the HTML tags and UBB code that you can paste in your message. The other nice part is that the bandwidth of the forum isn't tied up dealing with the images, instead that load goes on the host service. It's pretty hard to beat.

Ouch, better hope no one uploads a 5 meg photo and posts the link.. We still have some on dial up and one reason why the forums set a max size. Even on my wireless a 5 meg file takes a little while to download. Don't you just love it when someone sends you a video in a forwarded email that takes 5 minutes to receive...

I was on dial up this time last year. Images weren't usually a problem unless many (20+) large images were on the same page. Photobucket defaults to shrink the image considerably. It resizes the image automatically during the upload process. It can even be reconfigured to go smaller then 640x480. It doesn't require a software download, or a great deal of computer literacy. Since it creates a new copy of the picture online it doesn't change your original image, so you still have the full quality master for future use. Just for fun I uploaded another image, the original was 243kb 1280x960, after uploading it's cut down to 55kb 640x480. The entire process took seconds.
It's a safer more effective way of managing pictures. No shareware/freeware downloads, no potential virus or trojan nonsense. If it does create a problem the moderator of the forum can turn off IMG code or HTML. Those on slow dial up connections can also reconfigure their browsers to not automatically load images, or they can click stop if a thread is loading slowly, and/or avoid threads that overwhelm their hardware.

I use Infranview and photobucket for my host. The photobucket is free and i don't hink i will ever need to upgrade to have the room to post my pictures if I live to 150!
On infranview I choose "Best fit to desk top". Then it is kept to a reasonable size. The dpi it is saved at also makes a big difference.

I generally size mine down to 800 for the largest dimension. Although the site has a very generous size limit, guys on dial-up have a heck of a time loading large pics so we should keep it small (~50K or less).

For an example...let me put this 3.5 old print from a slide under the scanner.
Set in the lowest resolution on my scanner
here is the first print of Pat Collier's beautiful 1967 nats airplane? This was scanned at .50 dpi
and this last one is at 200dpi.
see the difference in size? n~

QUERY:
When I post I get text on top with the pix uploaded in a group at the end. However, I have noticed some folks can intermingle the text and the pictures, like writing captions.
How they do that??? ???

I'm still puzzling over how to make a .png (thumbnail) of a pic.
Meanwhile, I think if Dennis will right click on a post, he'll see "view source" in the dropdown menu. Click that, and it'll give you the html code that makes these confusers work. Let's see if this works....

I like this model that Don just posted. It looks like a JD Falcon, but with LG doors, instead of wheel panties. Maybe TomN will tell us?

This pic is on the NW Skyraiders website host computer, but is NOT on the website. It's like it's in PhotoBucket, etc. I opened the picture, and right clicked on it, then found "properties" and copied the address of the photo, and pasted it into this post. Caption: This is Dave Pellerin, trying to start his DS .50 powered RSM T-Bird. Dave Gardner holding, with Mrs. Pellerin observing and reciting stunt haiku. The location is Arlington Airport's CL site, a bit N. of Everett, WA. November, some years ago...amazing fall weather.
In both cases, I just posted the links to the photos, one on Stunthanger's host computer, the second on the NW SKyraider's host computer. You need to put the link between [img) (link here) ( /img] for this site's software to make 'er go! I had to leave out two of the brackets to make the html code mostly show up, and replaced them with )(. Click on the "postcard" icon above, that's between the YouTube icon and the Globe icon. Hope this helps understand something or other! ??? Steve

I finally decided I was going to try to learn how to do thumbnails.

After a mere 10 tries I got it.
