I don't understand some of the other terms. My computer will resize photos no smaller than 640 x 480 what ever that means. I don't know pixels and other terms. If this size works how many will fit on a post. Thanks.

640 x 480 means "pixels", or dots of color. That size works OK when posting, except if you have something particularly nice to post you could leave the pictures a little larger: 800 or even a bit over 1000 in the larger dimension.
How many will fit depends more on how much computer memory the pictures take. There the measurement is in kilobytes (kb): no more than 1000kb per post.

If it's a jpeg image (if it ends in a .jpg or .jpeg) then the size depends on the image content and on how much it's been compressed (ain't computers wunnerful?) 600x400 should be OK unless you have an image that's full of fussy detail or you've saved it at a really high quality level. Here's a pair of examples. If you look close at the bottom you'll see the picture sizes (identical) and the file sizes (way different). Then look at the two pictures themselves -- you should see a difference in quality.
