Title: Photo Contest !!!
Post by: Paul Taylor on April 15, 2011, 02:15:13 PM
OK I know everyone has taken some good photos of our model planes in action.
Like Elwyn told me one time...... take about 100 photos and maybe you will get one or two good action shots.

So I got lucky a few times. Here is what I think is the best photo I have taken. Post yours and let's see if we can come up with some good pictures of our model planes in flight.

(I must confess that I took this photo with Chris Sterner's fancy camera. I clicked off about 3 or 4 photos as he came over the top in a wing over. Just so you know I was not really in the flight path but is sure looked like I was from the photo.)

What do you win? Bragging rights. <=

Post a photo of a C/L model plane in flight, with a little about the photo.
This should be fun.

I start....
Chris Sterner's Vector ARF at our Cheezehead 2009. The photo only gets better if you flip is so the plane looks inverted.

The real trick is, as you indicate, a "fancy camera".  Action shots are difficult with electronic cameras costing about $200.  More expensive ones permit fast shutter speeds, but ordinary ones don't.  Now, I have a 35mm Pentax SLR with shutter speeds to 1/1000.  Problem is, film is getting hard to find, and prices are going up. So I seldom use the Pentax.

I guess a $500 camera might/should be in my future.

Hmmm Paul the shot looks great, but rotating it 90 degrees clockwise does improve the looks greatly.... it even makes the background clouds seem more realistic :! %^@ H^^

Not the clearest shot (my 14 year old son took this with a point 'n shoot digital camera) but everyone raved how dramatic the sky looked.

Indeed, this was from the 2006 Sig CL contest and shows Keith Sandberg's Legacy swooping down from an angry Iowa sky just as the sun behind us popped out.

There is a 3 or 4 second shutter delay when I try to use this danged thing and rarely get my subject in the frame.  I used to do a lot of 35mm work and did win some contests with the chemicals but...

And another of Keith's bird in level flight at the same contest.

Still can't figure out how to post large pictures in my post.  So here's the tumbnail version.

Here is how  img][/img] place this URL between those brackets http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=21326.0;attach=80554;image

And you got this.(http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=21326.0;attach=80554;image)

Go into edit on this picture and look at how I did it.

First open thumbnail and then right click on large pictire. Choose propertys and copy URL then paste between the picture brackets. Picture bracket button are in edit message window,

So here's one more try,... Rick Campbell flying his Saturn, once again in Wrentham, MA  September 5, 2009.

Here is one that will challenge your shutter finger timing- the " Infamous Leo Mehl " of the NW Fireballs flying his own design Rebel. Trying to adjust to the model coming at you from the wrong way ( Leo has to be different! )results in lots of shots of Leo w/ no plane to be seen. Finally got one with the plane just entering from the RH side of photo.

DOC, it is my grandfather.  The P-40 is a good flying plane, just pulls like a truck, since I've flown it about 6 or 7 times.  I have a couple ideas to make it pull less, we just need the weather to go from rain rain rain to sunny skies.

My contribution is a little different....it's not a spectacular close-up, but it's a record of a bit of
very spectacular stunt history.....it's "The Bomber".    Yup, it's Paul Walker's amazing achievement,
a four engine, semi-scale, B-17 CLPA stunter.   I consider myself very fortunate to have attended the
Muncie Nats the year that Paul flew this plane in competition.   One would really have to see it fly in
person to believe that it could be done.

To watch that B-17 take off, do the required level laps, then start the reverse wing-over and see the
reverse pull-out.....well, you just could not stop grinning from ear to ear.  Every time the four little OS
engines were started, everyone stopped and watched in amazement.  I think anyone would be hard pressed
to top that achievement.

Cheers.

Warren Wagner

Forget about trying to Top that acheivement - I dont think anyone can TOP that.
I am not even bold enough to say I equaled it, but I gave it a real Good shot - Flew it at a Nats, won a comp, and flew to a 3rd at the State Championships.

Even I still take my hat to Paul for that B17. Its not until you do it that you realize the scale of trying to get a 4engined semi scale bomber to fly a competitive stunt level is immense.

After doing the Lancaster and campaining it for a 1/2 year  - There are 3 things that Paul did with the B17 that stand out to me are above and beyond the model itself with all its spectacular's and are 3 things that I NEVER did ,couldnt do or would be to overwhelmed to attempt to acheive.

1: Starting 4 engines by Hand within 1 Minute.  ( I used an electric starter to get it done in time )
2: Flying it a World Champsionships  ( Best I did was a Nats )
3: Building it takeapart.  y1 ( The man is indeed a Brilliant Engineer )

I have to enter this picture taken by Jim Vornholt during the First Flight on my new CL Sport Scale 1914 Jeannin Stahltaube.  The model  is 88 In. WS, weighs 9 1/4 Lbs and is powered by an OS FS91 SII-P engine.

90 of the 92 Scale Cables are on the model at this time.  I am using some cheap wheels for the test flight, didn't want to risk the $35 Williams Bros, Scale wheels.

Not a model I'm afraid....

I took this at RIAT 2008, It had disappeared behind some trees and I could here it coming back so I stood there camera poised, it got louder and louder and then "There it was", almost low enough to touch. I tried to follow it, hit the button and promptly fell on my A$$, I expected to find I had a shot of the tail or similar but all in all it came out pretty good.  #^
