Cya "plastic" hinges to hinge 1/2A Ambush models for my 8 kids
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:21:52 PM »
I am looking to purchase a set of those single flat hinges that will slip into a small slit in 1/8" wood and are glued in with thin Cya glue.  This will be used to hinge 8 X 1/2A Ambush models for my Patton Street Pirate Pilots.

Allen,  IMHO those hinges are too stiff for 1/2a. I have tried them and had trouble. I use cloth hinges applied with dope or Sigment. Most recently I tried some of Tom Morris's dacron hinge material and was very impressed. It will be my go to hinge on all sheet elevators from now on.  You could always go old school and stitch the elevator.  Good luck, I think it's great what you are doing for those kids.  Mike

2nd vote for stitch.  Maybe not what you want to hear, but...

If you just can't stand that thought, and if they're painted, what about Scotch tape?  It should be floppy enough, it's easy and quick, and the hinge line sealing task takes care of itself.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Allen if u allready have the hinges cut a notch on each side so u are only using about 1/3 of the hing ,it will still be plenty string enough  stiching works good and easy to replace

   Hey Allen;
    Review the procedure for installing the hinges in the elevator of the SIG P-Force if you have the instruction booklet. They describe making cut-outs like Bob Whitney mentions also, that cut down the area of the portion that bends. I think I took a toothpick and rubbed a little Vasoline right at the hinge line also, and that kept the CA glue from creeping into the hinge area and making them stiff. They lasted for 6 years or so until I recovered the airplane and I cut them out. They were beginning to delaminate by this time, but should last long enough for your purposes.
   Type at you later,

Probably will not need them for more than six flights apiece.

Dental floss the wide stuff works great. Baseball stitch!
Easy to get and only a drop of ca on the end knot.

I've got some of those, I think. If I find them, they're on their way, For half/A, just cut them into strips, no brainer.

Edit: No luck, just went through a whole lot of stuff and no joy, sorry, Allen.

I use those hinges all the time.  I just cut them down to keep them from being stiff.  About an 1/4" wide for 1/2a.
