World Famous Fox .15 Hurl
« on: September 21, 2015, 11:10:54 PM »
The World Famous Fox .15 Hurl for 2015 is in the books.

As usual there was some controversy as to Dave Fitzgerald use of a proxy hurl. And as usual the "Hurl Commission" will be reviewing the rules as to keeping this event on the up and up.

Dave has been known to bend the rules of the "Hurl" to his benefit. But I say this with conviction, the Fox .15 Hurl is a serious event and the commission as well as all of the contestants take this event seriously.

The conditions were perfect and the field was well prepped for the event. The contestants were Hurling into a light 5 knot head wind and the ground was hard which made for some awesome bounces and long rolls.

18 contestants stepped up to have their shot at Hurl glory with Brett Buck looking for his unprecedented fifth title. Robert Harness was looking for his fourth championship as he put up a respectable 151 foot Hurl. With his 20 Geezer points, he was sitting at 171 feet with three contestants left.

As reining champion Brett has the option as to his order in the hurl. He elects to Hurl last which leaves me to Hurl right before him.

I had watched all the previous Hurls and noticed where the best bounces had been. I decided to go with a low trajectory Hurl into the slight breeze and hope for a good roll, which I got. Besting Mr. Harness' 173 to 171.

So now I'm sitting in first place with only Brett left to Hurl.

Brett has been in this pressure situation before and I wasn't to confident with a so so 173.

Brett wisely elects for the low trajectory Hurl but got a poor bounce and not much roll. The fox settles in at 136 feet and with his 10 Geezer points, he finishes third with a 146.

Brett, being the class act that he is, was the first to congratulate me and mumbles "Wait till next year".

Thank you Uncle Jimby for putting on a first rate contest and thank you to all contestants for you participation and support.

So Larry,

Did you get to take home the actual hurled Fox .15 or did you have to settle for a replica?

OK, I'll take these:  Run-ups are allowed. There was some informal discussion on that subject among the competitors. Overall opinion seemed to be that it probably doesn't help but if it feels good...do it!
Sorry, IC event only. Electric eligibility not even under discussion.
Fox on Trophy is pristine, Winner get to keep it. Hurled Foxes are well used and recycled yearly.
FWIW: There is a stunt competition associated with this contest but I think people mainly come for the food. 8)

Hey Larry.  I was wondering if that hat was given to you by the famous "hurl" oracle.  Sounds like the committee needs to take a look at outside help aiding hurlers again.

Hmmmmm, Randy.  The Fox isn't very aerodynamic so I'm not sure we're not talking apples and dandelions here.  In fact, it is often questioned whether a model flies better without the Fox .15 rather than with it.  There is evidence to support both points of view.  I believe Larry and the Commission are currently conclaving in secret after which a definitive determination will be presented.  The outcome is not expected to jeopardize the event itself as many enjoy simply seeing a Fox .15 actually airborne.

Yes, he is the Randy Johnson.!

Not so fast there, ace! This possibility has long been anticipated by the Hurl Committee. First and foremost, proxy Hurls are *blatantly illegal*, that's why the "David Fitzgerald Rule" was put in place to clarify this specific point. Secondly, refer to Rule 7, subparagraph b and e. B refers to professional athletes, who are banned. As Mr. Johnson is retired, and the 2 year lockout period has elapsed, this arguably doesn't apply. However, subparagraph E was put in place to ensure fairness by banning any members of any professional sports Halls Of Fame regardless of their time away from the game. Rule 113 would permit a special Hall Of Fame category and with sufficient notification, his presence would be welcomed, and a special trophy awarded.

Rule 113 is of course the "Wille Mays Rule", instituted after he and his rather pushy God-son repeatedly appealed to the Hurl committee for a way to become involved, both to do a public service by reducing the scourge of the Fox 15, and, frankly, to burnish his reputation as a competitor. Note that the aforementioned God-son, after having the perjury charges dropped, having never failed an official PED test, and having not yet been elected to the HOF,  is *fully eligible* for the regular Hurl.

That's why I asked if a run up was permitted. And I can tell you that the Fox 15 is AT LEAST as aerodynamic as the modern javelin (the design was changed in 1991 so it wouldn't fly as far and they could continue to hold the event on football fields). If I make it next year, I will demonstrate - baring a rotator cuff injury.

Last I hurled was in Alaska, summer of '83. That pretty much cured me of the urge, although it was a very good distance.  LL~ Steve

The GHQ would never be as good as a Fox 15 for hurling.  The GHQ has too many cast iron parts, making it more difficult to attain the all-important initial velocity, V-zero.  Besides the GHQ is well-known for running CCW, or reverse rotation.  A good hurl might see a GHQ ending up at -170 feet!

First, David's repeated claims of "proxy hurls" notwithstanding, you still get NOTHING, since proxy hurls are not allowed.

For the HOF category, it depends on how old Randy Johnson might be at the time of The Hurl. I expect he *will* get geezer points, but not nearly as many as, say Wille Mays would. In fact, it might turn out that no matter how well Randy throws or how well Wille throws, the geezer points may always result in Willie winning, should he attend. In fact, Wille McCovey might always come in second. Not that this is rigged in any particular way to make it come out the way Larry and I would prefer, of course. There's also the -50 for hitting a bird with a pitched ball.

Come to think of it, I think you are in the PAMPA HOF, are you not? AND, you hit a bird, did you not?  Good luck beating your neighbor with that on your record.

As per Section 3 articles 3 through 6.

3)   Geezer points shall be awarded to any Hurl contestant who in fact claims to be a Geezer.
4)   Geezer points shall be added to the distance of the Hurl. The distance plus Geezer points is what will be posted as the official score.
5)   Geezer points shall be awarded according to the age of the Hurl contestant as follows.....

6)   50 to 55 years old          5 Geezer Points
56 to 60 years old          10 Geezer Points
61 to 65 years old          15 Geezer Points
66 years old and up        20 Geezer Points.

This event is taken very seriously and we hold to the honor system. When a contestant enters the event he states his or her age so it is noted on the official score sheet. No proof of age is necessary except for Dave Fitzgerald.

Because of his past shenanigans the Hurl Committee keeps a very close eye on Dave and we will insist on documentation of age for him to participate. We will be flexible and will accept
              Current drivers license
              AARP card
              Military discharge papers
              NRA card or
              Parole papers.

I hope this clears up any confusion as to how we award Geezer points.

Well then, how did David get a proxy hurler???

OBTW, in talking to Randy, he killed a bird. I only destroyed my plane, and the bird flew away. So, that doesn't count. He feels bad about his bird, and said something about giving you a bird if he can't hurl for me.
