It's interesting.....PDQ seemed to change features randomly.
Years ago, Bill Mazoni found 100's of PDQ kits in a warehouse in south Jersey.
Among the finds were a bunch of Clowns.
I bought 20 and sprinkled them among the GSCB. The boxes were all the same, with a poor picture on a label that was glued to the box. Inside, besides balsa bugs, there were a least three distinct versions. One without doublers or cap strips, one with just a nose doubler, and some with doublers and cap strips.  All had the same instruction sheet.


The Brodak resembles them, and, as I understand, is Clown Racing legal. Brodak also sells plans.

In the late 80's my little company, J & J Sales was producing the "Clown" from plans from Ponds plus an old "Clown that we had taken apart.  We also were in he room one evening when the  "Flying Clown racing was invented.  After producing abut 200 of these kits two other guys, one in CA and one here in our club decided that they too should be producing this now again popular kit.  Then, a good fiend in Seattle had gotten a huge amount of the kits as mentioned above.  In bisecting these kits we discovered that PDQ had varied the Clown production to what ever wood they had in hand. The wing length was the first departure from the original, and the tail feathers were all over the place in size and shape.  That is why there are so many variations to this kit.  We stopped production of he Clown and turned our kit production to other kit venues.  I recently had the pleasure of obtaining a re-print from FM in 1948 that featured the Clown.  I remember that my first Clown cost me $1.95.  I flew mine with a new Christmas present of an O & R .23.  When that engine stopped the glide was nearly straight down it was so nose heavy!  Back then we didn't care, and we had a great deal of fun just getting the plane up in the sky.  More on this story will show up on SH eventually, but right now I'm up to my eyeballs with the latest novel.

OK, the adventure continues. Wow, what a trip down memory lane!  I spent a lot of time today pulling down three Clowns that have been hanging in my shop for nearly 20 years. I cleaned them up a bit and took the following photos.
First, here is the original J & J Clown, built as I have said from "Pond Plans" and original parts that we took from a wreck.
Here ae my measurements as the plane sits today.

Wing,,,,7 3/4" x 27 1/2"

Body length.21 3/4"y 3" top to bottom....1/2" fuse thickness

Stab & elevator...11 3/4" x 4 1/2 "

Weight as shown (with McCoy RH .19 as flown)...23 1/2oz.  Leading edge...3/4"


Next, The Smith Clown

Wing...7 1/2 " x 26 1/2"

Body Length...20", 3/8" Thick, Body Height 2 7/8"

Weight as shown With Mc Coy .19....19oz.

Stab& Elevator...1 1/4" x 4"

At this point in time, who would challenge you? However, in MHO, each competitive area where the "Clown" might be flown in just might need a larger dimension or size.  My "Brodak "Clown" might not be very stuntable, but it might need a much heavier LG to remain undamaged in those "less than perfect" hookups. I even built a few foam winged Clowns, but I wont go there in this thread.

Like another young lad that I've watched grow on this forum, once he learns what that thing in his is for, watch out.   Don't make the mistake I made with my son when he messed up,  do not, I say do not yell at him.  Some how with help from others my son won more trophies than I did.   I will never forget the look on hos face when the late Rusty Brown sked him to pilot a racing plane for him.   Yes they did place first.

Yep, she's a little more reserved at times but she flys.

And I never yell about planes. I figure, I built one I can build more. Plus, with Joey, there seems to be an endless supply of airplanes!

These babies are the reason I learned to fly left handed! Makes training right handed people much easier.
