Staffan,
I use 3/32 5 ply nose ring. When the cowl is almost done I put it in place and tape it. I then drill 2 holes off each side of center and then take cowl off I glue in two short pieces of 3/32 brass tubing and drill the 2 holes in the nose two 1/8th .125 then epoxy 2 short pieces in the nose ring. I then glue 3/32 ply across the inside of the cowl at rear. Then install 2 pieces of motor mount on the inside corners of the rear fire wall leaving them 3/32 short of the cowl resting edge This will allow the cowl to key in the rear. I then drill 2 holes in the cowl down threw the motor mounts in the two rear corners. I then install 4-40 blind nuts then bolt the cowl on and do the final shaping and fitting.

Gordy asked me if I had pictures showing the cowl mounting, and if I did, could I post them, as pictures are worth a thousand words.
So, here's how I mounted mine. It has proven out to be plenty strong enough for even thick grass.

Just wanted to mention that I've mounted all my cowlings like this for 35+ years and never lost one. On piped engines I use two screws at the rear, one on each side, to clear the pipe.

Hi Randy, I'm happy to report that each day often sees small improvements. My hands are the most affected now, Performing intricate motions are difficult, but I intend to start building a new model soon.
I'm planning on attending the SW Regionals, either as an observer, or if I can, a competitor. I hope to see you, and my AZ. friends then.
Gordy mounts the cowl as you do. I used a single center mounting screw, as I did not plan on using a pipe.
I started mounting my nose wheel to the cowl, in this fashion, back in 1994, when I built the first full bodied Pathfinder. I have 3 trike geared models that use this style of nose wheell mounting, and never had a failure, even under a few atrocious hard knocks.

Today Jerker made his first flight with his new Pathfinder. I was not there to watch but he reported that this is his best ship ever and it flies a lot better than it looks.
