Paint mask - is this one safe to use with 2k?
« on: October 23, 2017, 11:59:53 AM »
I have a 3m mask I used when doing a little sheet rock work.
Will this work for spraying the 2k clear?

Yes. The 60921 is a HEPA filter so is rated for organic vapors. Just be aware that because you used it primarily as a particulate filter, it may have become clogged with sheetrock dust. So if, while using it, you smell any vapors, the filters need to be replaced.

I used to do a lot of aircraft sheetmetal work. Because of the high particulate count, I used HEPA filters with a replaceable particulate filter which is just a dust filter on the outside.
Best Regards,
Bill

Thanks Bill
I will order new filters just to be safe. I can't order new lungs. 🙃

Paul...IMO anything is better than open mouth

But the photo of any old 3M mask really is too vague to know exactly what things it was designed to filter....only hint is 3M 60921....sorry I am too lazy to do the search on what that element was designed to filter

On the other hand it is not too hard to research the TYPE filters best suited to the 2K clear and get a set to fit your mask...in some cases expect sticker shock...seriously

IMO a lot of filtering decisions need to be about where you intend to spray... in a garage/booth/shop where concentrations get so dense you can barley see...I am all about full body protection

Out side where I can control the dust blow and what I take in my lungs...MIGHT see me in a surgical mask...or not

Thanks

It will be outside for sure. But not a real windy day.

Was going to put a few light coats on to hopefully make the new plane fuel resistant and at the same time shiny.

If you look at 3M's data sheet, they say they only last 6months from the date you remove it from the sealed package.

That is just the shelf life once you open it. The spec sheet also says it will absorb from it's environment even when not in use, meaning it can have a significantly shorter actual life while in use.

I've seen some spec sheets that suggest for pro car painting use, that these type cartridges are only good for about 48hours of actual use.

This is why I disassemble my mask after every use and store my cartridges in a sealed ziplock baggie in between uses.

Your health is nothing to play games with, so if you can smell anything while wearing that mask, it's not working. Mine totally removes the odor while in use. Oh yeah, and wear it tight, you'll know you had it on right when your wife laughs at the lines it will leave on your face.  ;)

When spraying any 2K product , read the label to see if it contains isocyanates (spelling). If so, only a spray booth and a suit/mask with an outside air source can prevent permanent harm to your lungs.

I take this one step further, store cartridges in one of those food storage vacuum bags with the air sucked out.
