P 40 kit
« on: March 30, 2006, 04:10:54 AM »
When I was  a  youngster, about 40 years ago I had a P-40 kit. I don't remember the make.,but it had two molded fuse shells.  If anyone knows where I can get one, I'd pay a good prise.

Do you remember the size? Top Flite had a series of 15 -25 size warbirds with a molded balsa fuselage. Top Flite also had a series of 1/2a with a molded fuselage shell and molded wing. I had the P47 lasted about three lapps was not repairable at that time. I have seen the 0.15 -0.25 size fairly regularly on ebay and once or twice I have seen the 1/2As listed.

Hi Greg,
Top Flite made your kit.
The had several series of planes with their "Superform" molded fuselages, ranging from 1/2A to 35 size Stunt ships and scale models.  Even GMA's ful fuselage Peacemaker was one of those.
There were two 29-35 size stunters, the Hurricane and the P-40, IIRC.
In scale, the 3/4" P-47 Leroy had and the 1" scale P-51 which was a NATS C/L scale winner.  I have two of he latter kits, and my childhood flying Buddy had a Hurricane.
This process was even carried over to their Gieseke Nobler kit for the turtle deck.

A complete kit on da 'bay usually brings a pretty good price.

Cool. I remember it had a 42" wing span.  Please let me know if you see one out there for sale. I was not a very paitent young kid. After I built the bones and tissued it I couldn't aford the motor and had no help in the process at that time, so I through it off the garage roof. I remember how well it glided to the ground. Splat.

I have a 1/2A P-40F version by Monarch.  Solid balsa wings, balsa ,fuse is in two halves, and has a 20" span.  Funny the price marked on the end of the box is $3.40. Think I remember them from the 50's.

Greg,

Anyone who admits to throwing a model plane off the gargage roof deserves some Karma. So you got one. I wonder if anyone will admit to the house roof or a bridge? Then too there is the firecracker toss. LOL lets see what this brings out. I'll bet you Bill Little did this stuff and more.

I had a Top Flite P-40 molded model once. It would NOT do outside loops.

HAHAHAHA!!!!  ;D
well I AM guilty of "test gliding" a few in my younger days.  My earliest flying buddy just happened to have a small barn at our disposal and we had plenty of time..........
Much more information I can't admit to, there may be a lack of the "Staute of LImitaions" or something.  :o

I threw a Monogram Aeronca (something like that) off a high place. Were these kits called "SpeediBuilt" or close? All balsa, colored printed fuselage sides, shaped wing section with sticks on the bottom and tissue.

Anyway, the high place I threw it off was the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty Hawk. Near as I can figure, I was about 7 or 8 years old. It flew a lot like Greg's P-40, actually. I built a lot of those Monogram things, and quite a few Cleveland kits.  8) Steve

In the 50's, my brother and I launched a Sinbad glider off the top of the bobsled run at Lake Placid, NY ....dissappeared  in the distance...never saw it again...probably ended up in Lake Champlain.

I launched a 2 meter glider off the roof of the MESABA hangar at Detroit metro airport at about 5am one morning- just as the sun was coming up. Plan was just glide it to the end of the apron in front of the hangar to check the sink rate.

Thats when I learned about "backside rotor" or air moving over a gap.

went out 2-3 feet then did 1/2 an outside loop and slammed into the hangar door, slid about 2 feet - got sucked back out and dropped the last 20' upside down.  Great entertainment for the rest of the night shift.

OK to all you Launchers. I have given each of you a Karma point for being honest about it. We had a lot of good times when we where kids or are we still having them cause we are still Kids?

I'll be a kid forever now that I am retired and have no bosses.

Bill,

Should I ever get a chance I'll throw you off the garage roof. LOL

Now that would be funny. Why is everybody always pickin on me?

Can any of you see Bill and I up on a gargage roof? That would be some garage!

Greg,
Maybe we could test fly Scott Riese.  You could kinda launch him on to his front lawn while I capture the moment in situ for a stunt hangar picture post  ;D  Of course we would certainly welcome an audience -  -  Little, Mr Bill Little camera crew to Riese front lawn  :-*  Careful Riese, we've got our mighty smoters at the ready so no nonsense, just surrender peacefully.  Getem Greg  ;D
Of course we would place the proper signage "Riese '40" profile just to comply with the post being stunt related <snicker>

Well, Chuck,
We might just need more than a garage for us to both be up there!  :o ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Someday we will all have to post a "CURRENT" picture of ourselves.

Unless, of course, any of us are in the Witness Protection Program!  :-*
