OZ NATS - Coverage
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:49:00 PM »
Round 1 started without a hitch, pilots breifing, judges warmup flight and very little wind.

There are 17 in Open and everyone put in a good first round. With the Wind picking up quite strong midway through the Round.

Mark Batty 2nd Place Russian Retro 76

Currently in 3rd Place after Round 1 : Peter White Geo XL Stalker .61

Currently in 1st Place : Joe Parisi Hot Pursuit 2 PA 75

Bruce Hoffman is using the Igor Burger Electric setup with Gyro down the Fuse

Plenty of Russian models here

Flying site

Joe midway through 4 Leaf Clover as he put it : A little loose.....

All important ScoreBoard

Sorry I didnt get any information on the Advanced guys.

Round2 Tommorow, lets see if we can break 1,000...

Round 2 was today - with much beter flying conditions.

Almost perfect except for the wind drift which kept switching.

There was actually a score adjusment due to a miscalculation and 3 scores were adjusted.

Joe Parisi is now : 1008

Peter White also went down - which put my 984 in 3rd spot.

After today Placings have not changed.

Mark Batty 1st : 1029
Joe Parisi 2bd 1023
Pj Rowland 3rd : 984

I know.... I know, today was a fun day with no less than the following :

1 Called attempt due to a start failure
1 Undercart ripped out of the fuse due to a locked wheel..
1 Rudder snapped off during taking the model from the pits to the contest circle.

Mine was one of those 3....... Still managed to put up a decent 2nd round score to hold down 3rd..

Yeah photos of the new plane... Alice doesnt like having her picture taken... so I respect those wishes..

Photos uploaded when I get a chance.

Man oh man, 76,75-big bores are putting the squeeze on everybody. I guess if you are headed "down under", better leave that LA 46 at home.  8)

If the wind picks up, those big bores are really going to come on.

Wind was perfect today...

I regret to inform everyone I have been forced to retire. Simple cannot get the Undercarts repaired in time..

Thanks for the support... I simply don't have the tools here to repair the problem.
Good luck to everyone left, who will take 3rd ?

It was a great run event - The Judging was of the highest standard. Looking at what was being flown the scores were reflecting that, one of the finest Judging Nationals I have been a Part of.

Well done to everyone to who placed high - It was a real fight between Joe and Mark, they were both in a league of their own. Even If I had of stayed I would not have stopped the Top 2.

Well done to James Batty - he's a great kid and has his dad's flying skill he deserved 3rd.

There will be a solid write up for Stunt News so most of the exact details are there.

The problem with my model was simple :

Wheel Jammed for some unknown reason, After takeoff which was bumpy I knew the wheel was going to be an issue. During landing of my comp flight It landed, rolled ( skidded ) to a stop and right at the end the plate holding the Undercart in ripped out. As a result it took the Cowl and 1/2 the Pipe tunnel with it. Not to mention putting the Wheel Spats into the underside of both wings...

The plate needed to be fixed properly with glass or Carbon - It was not worth risking more damage to simply get a possible 3rd. There is a decent amount of work left to get the plane back to a decent standard. Repairs have started and hopefully will be back in shape by July !

Derek : Things like this seem to happen at Nats.....

PJ,  sorry about the 'nats luck'.  Sooner or later we get struck by that lightening bolt.  That's what they make next years for.  In this case you'll get another this year here in the US.  See you here buddy.  Just got a PM from Mark Batty to inform me James got third with that Sukhoi of mine.  Shocked and pleased again.

Thanks for the field reporting PJ. Sounds like your new plane has a lot of potential still. Can't wait to see it.

Sorry about the gear. I know how it feels when suprises like dust devil's come along at a Nat's. I got off easy compared to Mr Hunt though on that one...

Classic and Vintage Stunt at the Aussie Nats.

I attended the NATS on 3rd January 2013 and took some photos of the Classic and Vintage competitions. Both contests ran concurrently on adjacent flying circles on the one day. The weather was extremely hot at 38 C (100 F) but winds were light. Many competitors had difficulty starting their engines and seemed to lack pulling power in the hot air at approximately 540 feet above sea level. At least four models crashed. The wide variety of models and vintage engines (some dating from the 1940's) and high standard of finish made for an interesting day.

Many more photos in high resolution are on my Flickr account here:

Hi Serge. Use as many of the images in your newsletter as you like. My only requirement is that they not be used to generate income. Oh, and it's always nice to be acknowledged as the photographer.
