Classic stunt was flown in great conditions and the judging was to a great standard. We fl a different pattern to fai out here and the changs often cause people to forget a maneuver . I was leader after rd 1 but after round 2 Peter White put in a great flight which was clearly better than my first. He was flying a Gieske Nobler 40 combo, his score stood until Reg Towell flying a Mk 1 Thunderbird with Fox 35 put up a score 10 points better.
I knew I had to put in a great flight which I did until I forgot the vertical eights - school boy error!
Almost a third of the field left out a maneuver during the contest.
It highlights the advantage of running a different pattern for Classic - adds an extra challenge.

That Caprice... H^^
Thanks P.J., it's great to know a little of what's happening around.... the planet. Those Noblers, Wow!!!
Looking forward to more pics.

Reg Towell with his Classic winning Thunderbird Mk 1 powered by a Fox 35.

Nice job on the Hound.

what was the ominous plume of smoke from?

Jeez, seeing those MAAA numbers is an eye opener. There's some seriously low numberage there (considering the MAAA is now into the 70,000's) but virtually no numbers above 10000.

That IS a nice Thunderbird by Reg Towell. I'm glad he placed first with it. I'm not sure that even Bob Palmer ever built one with the cowl done like the plans. It's a thing of beauty when done right. Marvin Denny's had the cowl done correctly. That's the only two I've seen like that, very impressive.

Hey PJ:
Do you know anything about the Fox35 Reggie used in the Thunderbird, stock or hi-zoot ?
-
At the field the other week he said something about stuffer & ABC , if I was paying attention Id Recall - But He said Stock - One of those etc .
Seems to go well enough - but the settling in improves the operation & a bit of wind pushes a T Bird along nicely , if you follow the drift .
He'd thought it a bit marginal at first, and its NOT overweight .

opps. the links aready there .

Good lookin' models! I like the Caprice paint scheme, very sharp!

That cowl is built just like Bob's The veco kit shows it that way. It was called a speed cowl and everyone back in the 50's & 60's built them that way.

Reg's engine was fairly stock.
Its only fair that Reg beat me at the Nationals.. Reg and I have had quite a rivalry over the years, I beat him at our State Championships this year in April with my Gieseke Nobler not only in Classic but also Open with reg NOT flying a classic ship.
Im not going to use leaving out my Vertical 8's as an excuse so I' simply say I didnt fly well enough and congratulations to Reg for the win.
I'm also not sure If its been mentioned but this was the first contest Reg Flew his new ThunderBird, infact - it hadnt flown a full pattern until the contest !!
I also thought it looked VERY classy and I'm thrilled he was able to take the win - Also I want to make mention Peter Whites Nobler / FP40 was impressive to boot.
