Title: Our Return to Home
Post by: Mike Griffin on September 13, 2021, 08:26:29 PM
After two weeks in Cumming, Georgia staying with family, Linda and I returned to home here in Jefferson Parish to begin the long recovery and clean up in the wake of Hurricane Ida.  As we approached home from the East the devastation became worse and worse and only became more horrid as we got closer to home.

Now comes the hard part that should not be hard....dealing with FEMA and the insurance companies.  Trash, trees and garbage is still piled high on the curbs and sanitation collection is not happening.  Parts of New Orleans have never recovered from Katrina and that was 16 years ago.  In case you did not know it, Ida hit exactly 16 years after Katrina to the day.

Murders took place at gas stations when tempers got out of control when people started cutting gas lines.  Police had to be stationed at gas stations to keep the peace.  The police started referring to these jackasses and "gasholes"

Places like Grand Isle and Jean Lafitte are just gone.  My neighbor across the street has extended family living with them and there are 11 cars parked in her yard.

Now we have Nicholas in the Gulf and even though it will go in along the Texas coast, we are scheduled to receive flooding rains from it.

The Gulf coast has literally been pounded for the last two years.

If you are a person who prays for others, I am asking you to pray for all the folks down here.  They can certainly use it.

Mike

I can relate having lost our home in a fire nearly two years ago.  We still have not recovered fully.  I will add the folks on the gulf coast to my prayers starting tonight.

Looks like we'll be blessed with a little more rain,
5 feet high and rising.
4 to 7 inches forecast for the Baton Rouge area from Nick.

Mike ... We hope and pray that you will be able to recover quickly from the storm.  I have come home several times after a Hurricane wondering what had happened.  I know that drive down familiar neighborhood streets covered with trees and trash.

Rising water flooding my shop, a tree across my van, fences down is a given, and roof damage are some of the things one for sure faces.  Me, Houston, you, southern LA .... you've for sure seen more than I.  We rode one out in the 80's, never again.

As a point of interest, now at 4pm Tuesday, the center of rotation of Nicholas is just off the Galveston jetties.  Meaning it hasn't moved very much is the last 8 hours.  We got a minimal amount of rain and some 60 70 mph winds .... no home damage.  But, being at high tide with some pretty good wind action and surge, my favorite boat ramp on Clear Lake ..... isn't anymore.

One bag of tree branches at a time and it'll get done .... Godspeed to you

Mike, I'm happy that you're alive out there.  It sounds like you at least have something to rebuild.

My thoughts are with you.

Mike....I'm very glad that things are improving for you.

My own 'story' starts with the 1900 Galveston hurricane that completely destroyed the area and killed my maternal Grandfather's first family of wife and 2 young daughters that were never found....not even a trace.

My Grandfather was a Western Union Wire Chief who was in Dallas on business and survived.
Some years later he married my Grandmother....they had 2 daughters of which one of them is my mother.

And here I am!!!!

There is an old adage, "When disaster strikes, Americans come together to help our fellow man."

That isn't always true. For  too many, the mantra is, "I'm taking what I want, and the rest can go to h...."

I'm seeing more and more of the latter these days

Floyd unfortunately what you say is probably true.  However, our neighborhood has come together to help each other and it is wonderful to see.  We have shared generators, food and whatever was needed to help each other out.  We had a lot of bad things happen in the city.  People were shooting each other for cutting in line in gas stations and the looters were hard at work in the city as well.   Where we live is pretty much removed from that kind of crap but it certainly does and is happening.
