Title: OTS "Lil Abner" background?
Post by: Terry Caron on December 28, 2015, 10:22:43 PM
Lil Abner looks like the perfect ride for an O&R .23!
Just curious, but does anyone know whether any of the 4 previous iterations of Lil Abner mentioned here were non-flapped?

I'm posting this here rather than in OTS in hopes a modeller from over the pond might see and respond.

Have you tried this on the Barton site?    Go to Barton Model Flying Club.

I'll try there, Doc - wasn't familiar with them.

Thanks.

It looks like just enough flaps to complicate construction and lose you your bonus, but not enough to actually change the flight characteristics.

People who know the motor better will have to comment on whether it'll do the job with a 36" span plane.

Precisely my thoughts, Tim.
BTW, I have the ignition .23 in mind.
While intended for a .21 diesel (not the same animal at all), at a stated weight of 7 oz and 310 sq in, how does it look for the .23 set-up, (about 15 oz. total) for ~7 oz/sq ft loading?

I can only quote what Floyd Carter told me about the .23 side port: by the time you add the weight of the ignition system and batteries, you don't have enough to pull anything around, much less a whole airframe.

I'm still planning on building up a Tethered Trainer or other really early OT plane for mine just to see how far I can get with the engine, but I'm not planning on being disappointed if all I get is a plane that can fly level.

C'mon, Tim - aim high!  ;D
FWIW, mine is the FRV, said to be better than sideports, and it turns a 9x6 APC to 10.7K on glow, so I'm thinking 10K-ish launch won't over-stress it.
Floyd has said modern ignition adds <3 oz, engine/prop ~6 oz and gas needs ~ 1/2 the fuel of glow.
I'm awaiting my ignition set-up to arrive to see what it does on gas.

The Ignition  O&R .23 will run better and needle better on glow fuel. (With lotsa oil content)

I understand that's true, De, no argument, but I have lotsa glow engines and gas ignition is sort of a "bucket list" thing.  :)

Sorry,

I meant run it on Ignition, but run glow fuel. (But you will use more fuel)

Ok, gotcha.
Actually, mentioned earlier, I did run it as a glow to make sure it was a good engine and worth getting the ignition components for it.

If you run gasoline or coleman fuel, you will get a lot more mileage out of each ounce of fuel. But.. the needle valve will be harder to set.

If you use a 2 ounce tank for gasoline, (or coleman fuel) it will be enough to fly the OTS pattern. If you find that you don't like gasoline and you go to glow fuel, the 2 ounce tank will not be big enough to fly the OTS pattern. Then you need to put in a larger fuel tank.

To tell the truth, I got it thinking to just bench run it for funzies.
I've read about the needling sensitivity on gas vs glow.
If it ever goes on a plane, it'll be a matter of whether gas is just too much trouble or not.

I'd be tempted to run glow fuel with 4 oz of Coleman fuel added per gallon. It would help a lot with the fuel economy, either glow or spark.

I recall a friend telling me that an Indian-built Mills 1.3cc diesel turned a 9-4 TF wood at the same rpm as an O&R .23, but I can't recall if it was the side-port or shaft-induction version of the .23, or if that was ever mentioned. When I got my 1.3cc Mills replica (direct from India), I bolted on a 9-4 TF and started the engine while holding it in my left hand, and not only was I not skeered, I wasn't in the slightest bit impressed.   LL~ Steve

I've run 2 other .23 glows on no nitro with a 9-4 APC at 11.8K and 12.1K, which I thought not too shabby.
I dunno if they'd last long at that, though.
