Hello, I would like to know who won the nationals in 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953. 1954. Also what model they flew. Just seems to me that the record of the event is Unknown?
Thanks
Chuck

Why do you think it is unknown? It has been covered many times on here and Pampa use to have it posted. Given a hour I can more than likely get the list together but I am going to let you do your own home work. It is not that hard. n1 n1 n1

For the record and in addition to what Brett posted above. Wynn Paul is nearing the completion of his almost lifetime work to write a book on the history of Control Line Precision Aerobatics. This will cover the beginning of control line activity and the evolution to our event as we know it now. The book will cover each year of progress, the Nats results, World Championship results, our Team Trials, articles published in each year and on and on. It will have many photographs, many not before published.
I do not think Wynn has committed to a completion date, but hopefully it will be in the next year or so, then it will take a while to get it published. I can assure that anyone who has any interest in CLPA will treasure this book.
The record is known and will be available to any who is interested.
For those who do not know, Wynn was a co-founder of PAMPA and was singularly responsible for getting the organization started, was the original editor of Stunt News for at least the first 10 years of the organization, wrote the stunt column in American Aircraft Modeler/American Modeler/Model Aviation for a over 10 years. Wynn was a serious competitor, placing in the top 20 at the Nats 13 times, placing in the top 5 four times and was on the US team to the World Championships in '79, placing 10th. Several of his designs were published.
Ostensibly, much of the continued interest in CL Stunt in this country can be attributed to PAMPA and PAMPA would not have been initiated without Wynn Paul.

Well, I knew Davey Slagle won the first two years without having to look it up. I know nothing of anyone else other than Bob Elliott and of course George Aldrich. Those first three or four years it was really just s side show, and didn't Davey Slagle win one of those years with a whip powered airplane? A Jim Walker model?
I have been watching for the announcement for orders for Wynn's book and eagerly await it. He has contacted me looking for information and unfortunately I haven't been able to help him out and wish I could have so I could say I helped!
Type at you later,
Dan McEntee

I don't recall seeing anybody use the first four Nats winning models in OTS events, or picture or plans, either.

;D My question is answered. Thank you for the information. Brett your the man. Keith, as always you are spot on.
Best regards to all.

Bill Netzeband built and flew a replica of Davie Slagle's Checkala Roma. It carried the same color scheme as the originals. Powered it with a Super Cyclone 65 on ignition. Reportedly, it could do the OTS pattern. He had it at the wind plagued 98 VSC. That airplane is now in the AMA museum. Stunt News gave a lot of coverage of Bill's endeavors around that time.
Plans for the Checkala Roma were published in Air Trails, April, 1947.

Brett,
Are these open winners or Walker Cup?

Apparently the Walker Cup, since a Senior (Werwage, '59) and a Junior (Cipra, '62) are shown....and of course Davey Slagle was a Junior.
In addition, I think the '54 Winner (C. Hill Hutchins) was a Senior.
-
Well, let's see now ---
The complete list of the Walker Cup winners who were Juniors and Seniors.
Dennis Adamisin Sr, 72
George Aldrich Sr, 52
Gerry Cipra Jr, 62

Don Ferguson Sr, 51
Hill Hutchins Sr, 54
Art Pawloski Sr, 58
Davis Slagle Jr, 46, 47, 48
Bill Werwage Sr, 59

Watched a Davie Slagle's Checkala Roma fly on the hard surface circle in Belfast during the summer of 2007. I think Maurice Doyle built and flew the model.

Maurice Doyle and his wife Helen were great hosts while we were in Belfast.

Did somebody suggest that "that the record of the event is Unknown"? Hmmm. Thanks to Wynn Paul, the record has not been completely lost.

That is a Nifty looking model.

Keith,
Great information, now the only thing to match up with these early winners was the pattern that they flew. We generally use 1952 as the cut over to the modern pattern but I understand that the "pattern" changed several times between 52 and 58. Is there a list of these pattern maneuvers used for the Nat's and the corresponding years?
