OS .80 engine, why so popular?

I have a couple of these engines NIB. I was told they have the energy of a good .40.

If this is the case, why this? Seems popular to me.

Why what Charles?

Its a 1967 engine that broke ground in its day and made more power than 40's of the same type and from the same time period.

It just seems like a big friendly lump to me! ;D

The were the biggest & baddest of their kind in their era.  Probably ran the same RPM on a 9x6 as on a 14x6...

Could they work in CL?

I hope so, I have one in this CL model. Not sure any more if I should use it. Ther are better choices.

I have seen two os 80's run, one in an rc biplane and one in a cl scale plane, both seemed rather lacking in power for their size.

One has to wonder if it was the airframes ........... or the power plant at fault here.

Honestly, I can't think of a reason why an OS 80H couldn't be pushed into successful stunt service as sheer power is not high on most fliers agendas.

Many years ago I built an RC model for my son based on my CL stunter (same wing and tailplane) which he powered with a new OS 80H and it performed brilliantly with a 14x6 prop and 80/20 fuel. Power was WAY more than any 40. Eventually he swapped it out for an Enya 80X which had noticeably more power but those engines are brutes anyway :).

Two rather neat features are that the carb can be turned through 180 degrees for inverted running which gives a choice of either high or low mounted tank or a simple venturi could be attached to the mount flange. The other neat feature is that the drum valve has an extra slot marked with an R for reverse running.

Back in the 70's early 80's they were used a lot in large R/C scale planes. I remember a guy from Lincoln Nebraska that had one in a heavy Sterling Stearman, and it flew it pretty well. Also had a friend with a large scale Cub that had one in it. They did turn a 14-6 prop very well. I doubt that there are many 40's that will do that.
