Organizer For Wire, Rods and Tubes
« on: May 10, 2012, 07:33:43 PM »
I had piano wire, carbon fiber tubes, arrow shafts,  brass, aluminum and copper tubing spread out all over.  My shop is small, so I needed to choose a spot and dedicate it.  I had several scraps of PVC pipe and conduit that were available.  I cut the pipe to different lengths, to accommodate the lengths of material I needed to store  I had a little nook in the basement wall that was the perfect size.  I glued up the PVC pipe with rubberized CA from Bob Smith and added a plywood bottom shaped to fit the nook in the wall and the bottom of the pipes.  It worked out perfectly.  All my tubes and wires are safe and in one place.  I like it!

Nope, no heavy things.  The room is small, 8 X 11, so I am making use of the walls.  I have two benches in there now, one against (and full width) the wall and my building bench which 20" X 60" which is on wheels, so I can move it around as needed.  I am still working on it every day, organizing and putting things into little plastic drawers in three organizer cabinets.  However, I have a Coyote on the bench which is moving along nicely.  Wing is almost done and the tail feathers are hinged and sanded.

I've been using the red cardboard tubes the K&S wire and tubing comes in.  I like the plastic pipe idea better!

Great innovation, Dick. I know what you mean about loose pieces of wire. I have all of mine laying on one flat shelf. What a mess. I have used the red cardboard tubes like Bill also. Usually wound up with forty two different sizes of wire in the tube that I had to pour out to see what was there. Thanks for sharing your idea.

As you can see in the pix, I have an assortment if items in each pipe.  There is enough room to visually shop, so I can get by with a setup the way it is.  If it should ever get so crowded with one of anything, I can always glue on more pipes.  I could have gone crazy and had a pipe for each class of item, but it would have looked like a "pipe organ."
