Ordering on line with safety
« on: August 20, 2019, 12:54:42 AM »
This may not be news to many, but it just occurred to me.  A while back there was a problem with a member in here having his information and money compromised by ordering from Brodak (I think) on line. Then my question about the Norvell engines caused me to be lead to look at the website, which I see is out of Russia.   Ordering on line from Russia with anything linked to my bank doesn't seem wise.......

Then it hit me.  Get a prepaid Visa card, load it with enough money for your intended purchase, and order with that.  They might get your name/address, but they aren't getting direct access to your bank account.

probably not an original idea by any means, but...........

My lasts years in the bank where I worked I was the one who solved these problems for customers.

Your idea is very appropriate and probably the safest.

I've ordered from Brodak on line and over the phone many times without a problem. Your "I think" is not fair to Brodak.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

The card i use online has a 500$ limit and it has been hit twice both times when at the Brodak contest, not at Brodak store  but getting gas at the local station. If I do get hit 500 won't hit me to bad or at all as I keep close watch on that card when ordering online..

I was referencing an issue another member here had when he ordered via the website, and I'm not certain it was Brodak, and noted as such in my post. Not trying to be negative on Brodak by any means.

I have ordered Russian military and diver watches from central Russia with no problems. It takes three weeks for them to arrive.
Vostok diver watches are a true bargain and not copy or knock off watches.

Several card companies offer "single use" numbers tied to your card. I know that Bank of America and Discover have this. Bank of America calls theirs "Shop Safe". Log into your account on line and ask for a new shop safe number, giving a maximum amount and time frame. Then the program generates a single use card number that you may use once on line or by phone. They can not use this number to charge additional amounts to your real card account. I have used it for years.

Norvel orders are not in RUSSIA...american web site is first HTTP:// and once you add an item to your cart changes to HTTPS:// for payment and shipping...been doing business with them over a decade now...never a problem and actually pretty fast, low cost shipping ---$9 as I recall

The Brodak issues has been resolved but some few did get hacked...was a long and painful topic here and on both the RC websites...ongoing all during the funfly contest out there

You MUST pay attention at all times to the URL at the top of every web page ...hard to see on a tablet or phone with odd operating systems and such....Many websites start you on a HTTP// (not secure at all and at any given time there are 30~60 BOTs scanning for data on you. Almost ( but not all) immediately send you to a HTTPS:// the secure site for transactions...MOST banks and cards will NOT accept an order from a HTTP site BUT some do

There are browsers out there that may not show you the HTTP:// or HTTPS:// but will icon a unlocked padlock or locked padlock
