Operation "Finish The Gladiator"
« on: April 18, 2013, 07:19:16 PM »
Some may remember a couple of years ago I had started a refinishing on my Schauer Gladiator. You may also remember that I became quite disgusted with the yellow dope that was to be the base color, so disgusted I hung the plane up out of the way (yeah right) and went on to other things. I recently heard about KSB Diamond clear coat (knew of it but never looked into it), so I found it and did some reading. From reviews and talks I found that this stuff is basically bullet proof, easy to apply, flows out flat, stays clear AND IT CAN BE POLISHED!!! Armed with that, I bought a quart of the clear and a quart of thinner and decided that I would experiment. I am doing the paint entirely in Duplicolor rattlecan colors. The funky yellow was sanded and what you see so far in the picture is the white sunburst base. From here I will mask the bursts and shoot the rest Garnet Red Metallic then a metallic black anti glare panel and some other trim highlights as I go, this will be followed after a week or so gasing off with the Diamond clear. I don't know how this will turn out but this clear is formulated to go over practically anything, rat-rod builders use it right over rusted steel and Jap bike restorers use it on fresh brushed or polished aluminum. In a few weeks, I'll know, stay tuned.

That's good to hear Mike, thanks, I'm very anxious to fly this airplane again. I've gone through allot of personal change over the last few years and it's good to feel the drive coming back!!!

Yea, sometimes life gets in the way of fun. I've had reduced activity over the past couple of years due to life getting in the way. Things are finally starting to look up and I am hoping to improve my participation level.

Nice to get back to fun things again. Rock on, Randy!

Well, a small problem with the red, one spot (one top of the wing of course) krinkled. So I'm going to give it a few day and see what happens, I have had spots like that shrink out flat again, but I'll probably have to sand and touch up. Still, the red is a good color for the Glad, kinda crimson. I think it will really pop when the clear Is applied.

Randy-

'good to see your old friend re-surfacing. The Cleveland contest is going to be in Akron courtesy of the Akron club again this year at the MAPS museum site. Bring it down! You'll like the environment, and I think there will be a strong eastern presence there. 'looks great. I too want to know what you think of the final finish and servicabil;ity, because I may just do the same thing on this long-toothed project, when it's ready.

Thanks Serge, I want to make that meet. I've never been to Akron, only thro it. So far the finish is turning out fair, but I know what's wrong so I could do it better. Looking forward to the Diamond clear and seeing how it works out.
